Question:

Attention Parrot Breeders...Curled/Crooked Toes in a young Nanday Conure?

Can anyone share their experiences with young birds who suffer from curled toes?

I have a Nanday Conure who is young & not long out of the nest (I am not the breeder), the tips of his toes are crooked and bent to one side and he is walking on the sides of them. He is anxious about stepping up onto/changing fingers, clumsy on the perch etc

I have been told it could be caused from calcium deficiency in the egg passed on from (or lack from) the parents, D3 deficiency, Rickets, Bone Disease etc

Can this be fixed by lots of sunshine & calcium, or am I going to have lots of problems down the track? Can this bird live a normal life?

Please help me!

Casey.

Yes it is a calsium defifiency, you should put lots of cuttle bone around the cage, and you should cut his nails but be carefull though, birds have a very thin vein in there nails that can bleed them to death so if you dont know what your doing just take them to a vet or expert that knows what there doing. you may have problems along the road, but the vet will fix everything, sure its expencive, but its all worth it even if there is responsibility/costs. but thats all part of it!
