What will grow the best right now? I live in CT. I would consider buying potted ones & not transplant this year if i have to, and keep them indoors for the winter. i was also wondering about planting mums since they are hardy and last thru a frost... but will they grow in AUGUST in new england? I'm 20, i never owned a house before so i never got the chance to garden. now i really wanna step it up. any ideas??

  1. you should be able to find some mums and asters that are in bloom.  if you plant them they'll come back next season.  I would also look at fall bulbs.  you don't do anything with them except stick them in the ground.

  2. get lucky bamboo plant.

  3. If you can find Flowering Kale in august then they will look better and better as it gets cooler. You could find roses in pots and plant them now. If you can find mums _now_ to plant then they would bloom this year and come back up, but if you wait until later then they will probably bloom and then die when it freezes. If you can find Impatiens and Marigold to plant now then they will grow until frost kills them. When Fall bulbs become available then you should buy as many as you can afford and plant them all over your yard so they come up next spring and bloom. The sooner you plant them the better. Don't make the mistake of thinking you can save them until Spring and planting them, it doesn't work that way. The more Daffodils you plant the better they will look and they will grow new baby daffodil bulbs every year. Tulips usually bloom once and then either get runty or die, do you have to plant them every year. Remember, the bigger the bulbs the better the are! Also, DO NOT buy anything from "Michigan Bulb Company"! The plants and bulbs they sell are teeny tiny itsy bitsy plants that either die right away or waste away to nothing or, if you are very lucky, will take about five years to look like a real plant you would want in your garden.
