Question:

Attic fan wiring - 12/2 or 14/2?

Hi,

I am installing a gable fan in my attic. My plan is to run a new wire from my circuit box with a dedicated 20 Amp breaker and 12 guage wire (I will eventually run from the same circuit breaker a line into my garage). My question is, is 12 guage too much for the fan? It is a pretty small fan (no specs available at the moment) and the wires (black, white and ground) are all very thin - is it a hazard to hook it up to the monstrous 12 gauge wire or is it better to go with 14 gauge on a 15 amp breaker?

  1. Either way is OK !4 wire and 15amp breaker would be OK but I always think of future and would run the 20amp #12 and you could always add to that circuit if the need arises.

Maybe more yard lights or some needed outlets.

  2. Your on the right track but to say for certain you would have to give the motor rating.

  3. The wires going to the fan are smaller because they run

such a small distance. You need the bigger wire to run from

your panel to your junction box...that's where the most line loss

will occur. I would use the 12 guage wire, especially if you are going to add more to the circuit....like your garage.

It makes no difference to the you hook up, but the bigger wire

has less resistance than the smaller.

  4. Use the 12/2 wg, if you have a portable device ( it has a plug) then you can extend the circuit to the garage on a 20 amp breaker. The other receptacles can be used on the branch circuit. The 14/2 wg is only for a 15 amp circuit sufficient for lighting.

  5. Building inspector in the state of Wisconsin and according to the nec if you have a 20 amp breaker you need to use 12 gage wire. Also check if in your state what you need for lighting inthat area and a service outlet mabe.

  6. how about having an electrician install it properly, cheapskate.
