  1. Attic fans or "Powered Roof Ventilators" require you to remove shingles around the location, cut the roof decking out, place the fan base down on the roof decking, and re-install the shingles around the base correctly.

Cutting a hole in the roof and nailing the base down over the hole and putting roof cement around it is not the proper way to install it.

They work very well, however you need an intake of air to make them vent the hot air out. Do this with soffit vents which moves the air from the soffit line all the way up to the power fan. Gable end louvres also help, but they don't move the lower air right above the ceiling as much as the soffit fans.

Be aware that some critics do not like using power roof ventilators with ridge vent, they comment that it sometimes sucks in air at the ridge vent along with rain, snow. I

I think the power roof fans work very well.

  2. If you mean attic ventilation fans for exhausting hot air from the attic yes they work. I installed one for my attic last year and it cut my cooling bills. If you mean a whole house fan, those work too but if it is hot outside it will only pull hot air inside. But if your house is hot inside and it is cool outside then it will pull the cool air in quite effectively.
