Atticus Jack under Delgadillo steal the Hinds Pomona Invitational at Fairplex Park
Trained by Brian Koriner for owners Janet Lyons, Jeremy Peskoff and Wind River Stables, 5-year-old gelding Atticus Jack goes on to win the $75,000 Ralph M. Hinds Pomona Invitational Handicap on the closing day at Fairplex Park.
With Agapito Delgadillo aboard, the son of Atticus, Atticus Jack helped himself to a wire to wire win by three parts of a length over his closest rival Norvsky in a modest upset in the $75,000 event.
Craig Lewis, who trains Quindici Man, suspected that from the races at Fairplex Park that the Pomona Invitational will too lack speed, and he we spot on as his 5-year-old runner couldn’t cope with the pace in his late surge.
Craig Lewis wasn’t the only one who was worried about the lack of speed, but unlike him Brian Koriner had a plan to tackle the lack of speed, and he specifically instructed jockey Agapito Delgadillo to get to the front.
When they broke from the gates, Agapito Delgadillo did just that with Atticus Jack, and went right in front of the pack to cover the distance of 1 1/8 miles.
The pair was up and running, leading the way as Quindici Man loomed behind kept off the face taking Atticus Jack as a potential target to run at in his late burst.
Atticus Jack on the way set dawdling fractions of 48.99 seconds for the half mile marker, and then went on to nail the six furlong pole in 1 minute and 13.21 seconds.
Out of Cremedelacramer by Avenue of Flags, Atticus Jack came off a win in the Pomona Invitational Handicap, as he landed the one mile long allowance claimer at Del Mar on 28 August, 2011.
Under jockey Martin Garcia, the pair took on 9 other colts and geldings ranging from 3 years and above. After entering the home stretch, Alley Hondro and Tamarack Smarty rallied left and right, but they flattened out as Atticus Jack went to hit the wire
in 1 minute and 33.60 seconds.
The Pomona Invitational Handicap was Atticus Jack’s third win of the season.
