  1. I've farmed land that I thought had a bad attitude but the thing that was revealed was that it was my bad attitude. The surveyors compass may have changed some peoples attitude toward the land when it revealed they were farming on another person's property or vice versa. Now, this is just a guess, if you are asking about altitude of land, the surveyor's compass allowed the land to be farmed on the couture and was a big breakthrough for conservation and preventing soil erosion. It allowed people to make grassed waterways to remove excess runoff, and numerous other improved farming practices.

Regardless, I have to agree that this was a poorly stated question. Whatever you are asking it is not a complete sentence and it is very hard to determine what you are looking for.

  2. A compass gives direction (north).

A level and rod is used to determine differences in elevation and can be used to measure distance (stadia).

A transit is used to measure differences in elevation, shoot stadia as well as arcs (360 degree circle).

Theodilites are used to survey property lines.

Non electronic levels use the very same principles and are little changed from those used by Lewis and Clark and other early surveyors.  The optics are better quality, but that's just about it.
