My non-profit group is planning to host a 5k run later this year. My question is to those who have participated in events like this. What is the average entry fee you pay? Also, if there were suggestions you could make to the planners of the events you've participated in, what would they be? I greatly appreciate any serious answers I get. Thanks!

  1. well i would say that you should charge anywhere between $5-$10. the reason i say is because you mentioned that this was the first time you would host this event. in order to make it more popular and maybe an annual event, keeping the price low is the best thing to do. you would not want people to criticize your cake before they test is based on its cost. would you? let them see how fun it is this year and increase the dollar in the upcoming years. you know what i mean? it is going to be more fun when there are a lot of participants. and with the entrance this low(for now) who could resist. good luck

  2. For starting a new one that is unheard of and probally unpopular the first year i say the price should be $10-15.

  3. I SIT ON A COMMITTEE (SPONSOR CONTACT PERSON) OF OUR LOCAL MARATHON, 1/2 AND 10K RACE.

IT REALLY DEPENDS ON HOW MUCH ITS GOING TO COST TO OPERATE ON YOUR RACE...TIMERS, BIBS, FORMS, WEBSITE,POST RACE FOODS, WATER STATIONS, OUT HOUSES, ADVERTISING, MARSHALLERS, ETC.  TRY TO GET AS MUCH DONATED BY SPONSORS.  WE CHARGE $15 EARLY BIRD (10K EVENT) THEN LATE CHARGE/DAY OF RACE CHARGE $20.  WE OFFER GREAT PRIZES, POST RACE FOOD AND WATER STATIONS AND IS HELD ON A HISTORIC STEAM MILL SITE.  MAKE SURE YOU GET YOUR COURSE CERTIFIED, AND HAVE PERMISSION BY THE CITY TO PUT ON THIS RACE, HAVE A FIRST AID ATTENDANT,  EVEN GET A HIGH SCHOOL BAND TO PLAY ON THE RACE COURSE OR POST RACE...(WE DID THIS FOR OUR 1ST RACE AND PEOPLE LOVED IT) CREATE A THEME (EX. TURKEY TROT - NOV., RED DRESS RUN - BOTH MEN AND WOMEN RUNNING IN RED DRESSES, ETC, MAKE IT FUN)  DON'T FORGET TO PUT ON A LIABILITY WAIVER ON YOUR FORM AS WELL.

MAKE SURE TO DELEGATE EACH PERSON FOR EACH PART OF THE RACE AND HAVE ENOUGH VOLUNTEERS TO HELP WITH EACH SECITON.    WE ADDED SHIRTS FOR EXTRA $10

FOR REGISTRANTS - TO GUARANTEE THEM TO HAVE SHIRTS, ORDER BY A CERTAIN DATE.

TALK TO RUNNING STORES, THEY OFTEN SPONSORED MANY EVENTS AND CAN GIVE VALUABLE ADVICE.

  4. At the fun race I ran in, there were complimentary doughnuts and hot chocolate and cold lemonade. It was fun to eat and drink after the race.

  5. I've usually paid around $25 for the 5K races I've done.  In most cases, that's gotten me a t-shirt, a goody bag (with coupons and sometimes little gifts like hair ties or travel toiletries), professional timing, a water stop, and post-race snacks.  Suggestions I'd make: have signs/map to restroom locations at the start area, have indications at start where various paces should line up (signs, chalk lines on pavement).  A really nice extra at a summer race I did was a sprinkler to run through about midway through.  Online registration is a big plus for me, as I'm not very likely to get organized enough to print out a form to fill out and mail it in.

  6. As a regular 5k runner, i won't enter a race that costs any more than $25 pre-register, and $30 race day registration.  That seems to be the average for 5k events.

As far as planning tips, just keep in mind that the participants are mostly there to have fun, so keep things organized but not too strict.  I'm also assuming that sponsers have allowed tee shirts and/or bags of coupons to be available for each runner, which is something I look forward to every race.

Basically, just put someone with lots of personality on the mic and do a little award ceremony after the race, and it will be a blast!

  7. 15 for kids pre 20 @ race

    20 for adults pre 25 @ race
