I am from Orangeville, Ontario & I am going to Humber college next month to become a preschool teacher. Well it was a spontaneous decision..& now I see that a preschool teacher's salary might not be sufficient enough to live on. I was wondering if there is anyway I can become an elementary school teacher without a teaching degree? (4 years is sooo long!!) can I just get some sort of teaching certificate? & what about kindergarden teachers? can I teach that with just an E.C.E diploma or do I also need a teaching degree? do kindergarden teachers make more money than preschool teachers? I don't think I can live on 12.00/hr! Help!

  1. First of all, choosing a career based on salary is a no-win as you will have to do it for the next 40 yrs so be sure its what you want.  If you do really want to teach and know you can't live on the salary you would earn as a preschool teacher, then your decision is already made--you must get a higher education whether it takes 4ys or not.  As to the 4yr---to paraphrase what Ann Landers used to say...how long will 4yrs be if you DON'T take higher education?

  2. I work at a school, and I know that practically every student that gets out of teacher training wants to teach kindergarten or elementary... Even if you get your degree, expect to wait quite a long time to earn that $12.00 an hour too.  Not too many jobs for elementary because those teachers don't quit, they just retire.   You might be better to shoot for a high school job, at least there are jobs available at that level.
