Aubrey Huff resigns with San Francisco Giants
Any concerns that San Francisco Giants’ fans had that Aubrey Huff would leave for another team were put aside Tuesday when the first baseman signed a two-year deal worth $22 million with a club option for 2013.
“There was big interest out there,” said Huff. “But in the end, it wasn't going to take much to come back here for me. Some other team would have had to blow me away with like a four-year deal or something and a lot of dough to stay away from here.”
Huff will earn $10 million in each of 2011 and 2012, and he’ll receive a $2 million buyout should the team opt not to keep him for the 2013 season. If they do keep him, he’ll make another $10 million in 2013. Last season Huff made $3 million.
Huff lead the team in RBIs last season, making his signing one of the top priorities of the off-season for general manager Brian Sabean.
“One other club accelerated their interest and we played tag with that and were able to get in a position where we matched what the other club did,” said Sabean. “Aubrey wanted to be a Giant versus going somewhere else.”
Huff adds more to the team than just hitting. He’s also a good locker room presence, something that wasn’t lost on Sabean.
“That certainly helped, because we know his presence in there is a big one,” he said.
Huff hit .290 last season with 26 home runs and 86 RBIs. In the play-offs, he hit .268 with one home run and eight RBIs. It was his first career play-off appearance.
In 11 seasons in the Majors, Huff has hit .283, 229 home runs and he has 838 RBIs. He will be 34 years old by the time the season starts next year.
