Auburn Tigers’ Aairon Savage will have surgery
Auburn Tigers’ safety Aairon Savage will undergo surgery after suffering an injury on a play in the fourth quarter of a game against the Arkansas Razorbacks on Saturday 16 October.
The youngster was involved in a play late in the game against Arkansas, which saw his team mate, safety Zac Etheridge, recover a fumble.
Savage has struggled with injuries throughout his time at Auburn, missing the last two seasons with serious injuries to his knee and Achilles’ tendon. The youngster was allowed to play a sixth year with the Tigers after the NCAA gave him eligibility because
of his time missed due to injury.
The team did not say a great deal about how long Savage would be out for, with coach Gene Chizik only going as far as saying the sixth year player would be ‘out for a while’.
The injury came during an important and exciting win by the Tigers over conference rival Arkansas. The win over the Razorbacks helped Auburn to take the fourth overall spot in the Bowl Championship Series standings. Moreover, the club was also able to move
up to fifth in the AP Top 25 rankings.
The win was very important for the Tigers, who have been criticized over their easy schedule, even though the club has now defeated three ranked sides. In addition, the win over the then 12th ranked Razorbacks has prepared them for a game against
the sixth ranked LSU Tigers on 23 October.
The Tigers only have one game remaining against a non-conference side, a game against Chattanooga on 6 November. Conversely their remaining engagements will see the club challenged by conference sides LSU, the Mississippi Rebels and the Alabama Crimson Tide.
The loss of Savage will hurt a Tigers defence, which has already had difficulty remaining at the top of their game this season, sitting 63rd in the nation, allowing an average of 24.4 points per game.
