Auckland's Mark Anscombe delighted with his team’s impressive win over Southland - Rugby News
The head coach of Auckland, Mark Anscombe, is delighted with his team’s brilliant run against the Southlanders in the ongoing 2011 ITM Cup. Auckland stunned Southland by an impressive margin of 39-26 in the sixth round of the ITM Cup on August 3rd. Earlier,
the Auckland side had a very bad match against Taranaki as they received an insulting defeat of 39-11 on July 31.
However, they remained impressive against Southland and clinched an important victory after a great show. Speaking to journalists on August 4, Mark Anscombe applauded his players for their splendid effort and said that they really deserved the victory.
Auckland had a terrible run into the tournament as they lost all previous matches with a poor effort. They took control of their latest game from the very first minute and finished off the first-half with 32-12. Auckland side remained a little unimpressive
during the second part of the game but still managed to grab a hard fought victory. They scored four tries in the match with a great contribution by Gareth Anscombe as he scored 19 individual points for his team.
He was impressive with his boot and kicked four conversions, two penalties and one well executed try in the match. Joe Rokocoko, Hadleigh Parkes and Pauliasi Manu also elevated their side with one try each.
Talking to reporters Mark Anscombe appreciated his side and said that, “We showed a lot of character to hold them out, they came at us and we were falling over every five minutes with another injury and we were trying to put guys on the park. But for a young
team they held in there pretty well and the defence at some stages when was superb.”
The Auckland coach further said that, “Because this is Auckland we always get questions asked because we're big and have got lots of numbers does this mean anything to them and do they care? I think we had some boys out there who showed everyone that they
do care.”
Auckland will play its next match of the tournament against North Harbour on August 7.
