Finding a reasonable place to stay under US$50 per night shouldnt be too difficult but hotels at that price may be few and far between. If there are two or more of you then these types of accomodation start to lose their price advantage. Another alternative, if you are comong during the university vacations, is to rent a room at Auckland University campus. Well, US$50 is about NZ$75.

There's heaps of backpacker hotels if you're into that. (www.yha.co.nz would be a good place to start)

Or there's a furnished apartment block in the middle of town that seems good. Its quite new (around a year or a year and a half old). The rooms are tiny but the rate is good at NZ$275/week: http://www.columbard.co.nz/

Otherwise, try www.wotif.co.nz for bookings 1 month in advance or less. The Princeton on Symonds St sometimes has real cheap rooms on this site (they are also serviced apartments)
