A massive double-ton from Colin Munro, coupled with a century from http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Josh-Brodie-c1736 got the Wellington Firebirds’ second
innings off to a steady start on the third day of their ongoing Plunket Shield match, at the Eden Park No 2 in Auckland, today on November 28.
Put to bat first on day one, the Firebirds had gone on to rack up a first innings total of 380, led by centurion http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Michael-Bates-c1947 (11-2-50-2),
and Colin Munro (12-1-48-2).
Auckland, however, put up a fiercely competitive batting display. The top four – comprising http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Colin-de-Grandhomme-c51409 (46) – chipped in with useful scores, but they, alongside wicketkeeper skipper Gareth
Hopkins (8) were soon removed, leaving the Aces at 174 for 5. The main wicket-takers for the Firebirds on day two were Dane Hutchinson and Scott Kuggeleijn, both of whom took 2 scalps each.
Colin Munro and Craig Cachopa, however, joined forces near the end of day two, to get the team back on steady ground – the former scored a fluent century, while the latter managed a half-ton, and by the end of the day, both were unbeaten, and the Aces had
managed to reach 381 for 5.
Day three saw Munro (269*) bringing his individual score up to a stellar double-century, while Cachopa (166) succeeded in reaching triple figures. Their partnership swelled to a massive 377 for the sixth wicket, and by the time Cachopa was sent packing by
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Mark-Gillespie-c1904 (40-7-166-4), the team total had reached 551.
Munro, however, saw the innings through until the end, and was joined by http://www.senore.com/Cricket/KD-Mills-c1781 (1) for a 31-run stand, and by Michael Bates (23) for a 38-run partnership. A final effort – an unbeaten 28-run stand with McClenaghan (5*), got the team up to 658 for 9,
after which they decided to declare.
The Aces’ performance put them firmly in the driving seat, but the Firebirds got their second innings off to a strong start, courtesy Josh Brodie (60*). http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Stephen-Joseph-Murdoch-c91153 (36) both made valuable contributions, but were dismissed early,
and by stumps on day three, with Brodie and Grant Elliott (6*) at the crease, Wellington found themselves at 145 for 2.
