Audi Mt. Brilliant and Newport-Barbarossa Leather in reach 2010 US Trust Cup polo final
An outstanding performance from Audi-Mt. Brilliant's polo team won a berth in the final of 2010 US Trust Cup at Grand Champions Polo Club against the Newport-Barbarossa Leather foursome.
Both teams qualified for the final after thrashing Flat Out and Piaget in the semi-final held earlier at Grand Champions Club.
Goldstein of Newport-Barbarossa Leather and Marc Ganzi of Audi-Mt. Brilliant rendered outclass performances and scored nine and seven goals respectively, which got their foursomes to the final.
In the first semi-final of the tournament, Audi-Mt. Brilliant started the game with four-goal lead against Flat Out in the first seven minutes of the chukker.
Leading goals from Audi-Mt. Brilliant's side were hit by Lucas Lalor and Marc Ganzi while two goals were acquired by handicap. Shortly the lead expanded to five goals with a classic hit from Ganzi.
Audi-Mt. Brilliant's lead reduced to three goals, 5-2 with two back to back goals from J.J Celis for Flat Out at the end of first chukker. Flat Out’s attacking player, Paul Knapp marked the first goal of the match. However, Ganzi reacted with a wonderful
6th goal.
Before the end of first half, Brandon Phillip hit one more goal for Flat Out and left the field with a 6-4 score. The fourth chukker commenced with a second goal from Paul, which reduced Audi-Mt. Brilliant's lead to one goal, 6-5. Withal, Audi-Mt. Brilliant’s
Ganzi scored two more goals at the end of the chukker with an 8-5 result.
The fifth chukker was opened with another goal from Ganzi, but Flat Out hit back with a goal, which was scored by Paul Knapp. The score line went back and forth in this period as Celis of Flat Out scored off a penalty shot in reply to Ganzi’s seventh goal.
Audi-Mt. Brilliant went up to 10-7 at the end of the chukker.
In the start of the last chukker, Sugar Erskine added a goal for Audi-Mt. Brilliant, while Knapp and Phillips of Flat Out cut the lead down with a couple of goals before expiry time. Audi-Mt. Brilliant concluded the game with a score of 11-7.
Ganzi was the highest scorer from Audi-Mt. Brilliant's foursome while Erskine and Lalor marked single goals each. Two goals were obtained by handicap. Knapp scored four goals for Flat Out while Celis and Phillip marked three and two goals respectively.
The second semi-final of 2010 US Trust Cup was played between the Newport-Barbarossa Leather, the 16-goal handicap team and Piaget. Newport-Barbarossa Leather outwitted Piaget with 13-10 score and qualified for the final against Audi-Mt. Brilliant.
Piaget scored the first two goals of the game by handicap while Melissa Ganzi hit the third goal for the team, which ran the lead up to 3-0. In response, Newport-Barbarossa Leather’s Hector Galindo marked his first hit followed by three goals from Goldstein
and the first chukker concluded at 4-3.
The second chukker started with two goals from Ganzi while the opposition leveled the score at 5-5 with a class goal from Goldstein. A couple of goals were hit by Leo Madelibaum putting the score up while Goldstein marked another unanswered goal in the second
chukker. The first half of the game ended with a three goal lead 8-5.
Newport-Barbarossa Leather ran up a four-goal lead, 9-5 with Goldstein’s sixth goal at the start of the second half of the match. Piaget’s foursome revved it up and got three more unanswered goals by Melissa Ganzi, which cut down the lead to 9-8.
Newport-Barbarossa Leather’s lead expanded again after three successful hits from Goldstein and the score reached 11-8 at the end of the 5th chukker. Piaget’s Ganzi replied with the seventh goal of the game. Newport-Barbarossa Leather obtained a goal on
a penalty shot from Julio Ezcurra while Kris Kampsen hit the first goal of the game from Piaget’s side.
The final goal of the game was scored by Goldstein’ relentless attack and Piaget won the match with 13-10. Among the top scorers, Goldstein was number one with nine impressive goals while Mandelbeum marked two goals. Galendo and Ezcura added one goal each
for the winning foursome while Ganzi was top scorer from the Piaget side.
Newport-Barbarossa Leather after winning the decisive match reached the final to face Audi-Mt. Brilliant, where the winner will get the trophy of the tournament.
