Audi edge past Julius Baer by 8-7 to lift 2011 Julius Baer Beach Polo World Cup Sylt
Gaston Maiquez delivered an impressive performance with an assist, as the Audi team powered an 8-7 victory over Julius Baer to clinch the 2011 Julius Baer Beach Polo World Cup Sylt. Siegfried Grohs of Germany and Gaston Maiquez of Argentina were the
architects of the victory in the final game.
It is vital to mention here that 2011 Julius Baer Beach Polo World Cup is one of the leading polo tournaments in Germany. It is being played at the Sylt Island that is situated in the Northern part of the country.
It was quite a hardly fought game, where both the teams earned lead at times. The start of the game was quite competitive, as both the sides scored eight goals in the opening three chukkas. The period was filled with lot of attacks and counter-attacks,
but the Julius Baer team was hanging on to a two-goal lead, 5-3 after the first half of play. Sven Schneider and his team-mate, Lukas Sdrenka, were at their best and took part in the scoring to put their team ahead onto the score-board.
However, the lead changed hands with Audi in the fourth set of play when Gaston Maiquez scored three goals from the field and penalty conversions. The resilient defences kept the Julius Baer line-up off the score-board throughout the chukka.
In the last round, Maiquez notched a brace to take an overwhelming three-goal edge, 8-5. Though the strikers from the Julius Baer side revved them up in the concluding minutes, but they failed to reduce the wide difference and lost the game at 8-7.
Owing to brilliant show-off, Maiquez was honoured as highest goal-scorer (14 goals) of the week-long tournament. Maiquez received €200 for every goal he scored during the event. The total amount of €2,800, which he earned for 14 goals, was donated
to Sylt-based Coastal Protection Foundation. The charity organisation received an overall donation of €15,000 during the 2011 Julius Baer Beach Polo World Cup.
In the meantime, Lukas Sdrenka, who showed wonderful performance in the tournament, was offered to be a part of the Julius Baer International Polo Academy at Polo Park Zurich. The five-day training programme is scheduled to be held from July 18 to
July 22, which will assist him to improve his skills. This training programme surely will prove a mark-up point in the professional career of Sdrenka.
In the other play-off game for the 3rd and 4th places, Lanson defeated GOSCH (All female squad) by a single goal, 5-4 while Maus Real Estate took Koenig Pilsner by two goals, 4-2 in the 5th and
6th places.
