Audi edges past Faraway in USPA Piaget Gold Cup – US Polo Report
Nico Pieres nailed the game-winner, as Audi powered a 12-10 victory over Faraway in the opening match of the USPA Piaget Gold Cup being played at the International Polo Club in Wellington, Florida.
The two teams started the game at very high pace but could not score in the opening seven and half minute action. Faraway obtained a score through a handicap goal and established their first lead in the game. Ganzi, the excellent striker from Argentina marked
a field goal and had it all even at 1-1.
The attackers of Audi cranked up their offence and scored two more goals while holding opponent team only for a single point. Nic Roldan connected on a spot shot and increased the Faraway lead by one point but the lead could not last for long as strikers
from Audi first equalised the game and then took lead.
It was quite a lucky day for Audi, as it obtained an automatic goal while Rodrigo Andrade notched another goal from the field and put his foursome ahead on the scoreboard. The first chukkar was concluded with Audi holding a narrow one goal lead, 3-2.
The second frame was quite a low scoring affair, as only one goal was scored in the period. The goal was scored fby Roldan of Faraway. Both teams took a three-all score with them to the sidelines at the end of the second frame.
The third set of play was completely dominated by Audi, as it received three more goals while minimising the Faraway strike only for a single goal. At the start of play Roldan scored off a spot shot and increased the lead for Faraway. However, the strikers
from Audi were not going to take the hits sitting down. Nico Piers added a goal while his team-mate Andrade took it upon himself to put two more balls between the posts. The first half concluded with Audi hanging on to a two-pint, 6-4 advantage.
The fourth frame was quite hard hitting filled with attacks and counterattacks. Mike Azzaro marked a goal from the field while his team-mate Roldan connected on a spot shot for Faraway and tied the knots at six-all.
Nico Pieres scored another goal and regained Audi’s lead but could not hold it for too long. Roldan scored another goal and again levelled the score at seven-all. Another Audi goal went up on the scoreboard from Gonzalito Pieres to break the tie-up and conclude
the period with a single-goal Audi’s lead.
Roldan marked a couple of goals for Faraway which were responded by a goal from Nico Pieres to tie the knots at nine-all with one chukkar left to play.
Roldan opened the goal-scoring in the final set of play to put his foursome ahead but failed to maintain its momentum as a field goal from Nico Pieres evened the score at 10-all. Both sides were fighting for a go-ahead goal and this time Audi was succeeded
to do so. Ganzi scored a goal followed by a goal from Nico Pieres which sealed the victory at 12-10.
