Audio On Computer

Computer suddenly stopped recognizing audio devices. Last function was converting CD's to itunes for play on ipod. CD was playing and then nothing. Windows Media nor RealPlayer are operational.
I have unplugged and plugged in the speaker system.
How do I fix this?
