  1. Some audio cables are better than others. HDMI will give you the best audio and video. Although the red and white audio cable gives you good sound, a digital optical audio cable will give you better sound.

  2. The factual answer to your question is "no, they aren't all the same", but the honest answer is that unless you are spending waaaay too much on your audio & video equipment, 99% of people will not notice any difference in sound or picture quality...

  3. Not all cables are created equally. There is performance differences between cables. A high performance cable will make sure that your system runs at its best. Just know that each step you take up in cable performance the performance difference becomes less apparent. It will also greatly depend on your gear as well.

Use the <10% rule when chosing cables, also make sure to audition them first to see if the performance diference is good for that cable or could be better used somewhere else.

  4. no all cables are not the same. they range from radioshack obtainable ones which are cheaply made and un-insulated with generic connection heads. to several hundred dollar monster cables with fine weave copper insulation and 24k gold plated connection heads for superior connection speed and clarity. there are many different qualities for HDMI and once you get to $80+ range the noticeable differences are minuet. as for the red an white audio cables they are mostly all the same although if you have many wires in you home audio system, getting insulated ones wouldn't be a bad idea. if your TV and stereo support optical cable output/input that would be a better bet for true surround sound and clarity... hope something helps =)

  5. That is a question that I've been wrestling with for many years. My take on all of this now? Don't be too fussy about the cables thickness, but do pay some attention to the quality of the connectors, because that is where trouble arises many times.

  6. ".. want to connect the TV to my stereo system with the red/white audio cable"

    This is kind of silly.

The red/white audio cables are for Stereo sound.

Sound for HDTV shows  or BluRay disks is 5.1 just like your DVD player. But you cannot send this to your receiver with the red/white cables.  (The best you can get is the old ProLogic sound).

If you dont have a 5.1 receiver or only have red/white outputs from your TV - you are stuck.

The only advice I have is that you should find some L/R analog cables with each wire being as thick-thicker than your CATV coax.  You can find really cheap red/white cables with very thin almost "Headphone" thickness wires.  Avoid these - they tend to NOT be insulated.  Get the AR Pro2 cables from BestBuy or even Radio Shack "MegaCable" cables.
