I'm auditioning for my high school production of West Side Story. Its a cast of 50-70. I would give my arm just to make ensemble. Anyways, I need a song. 16 bars. I'm a girl with 2 1/2 octave range. E to high C. I think that's it. Any ideas? Preferably something from Musical Theater that is not overdone. Thanks sooo much!

  1. awesome! My high school is doing west side story as well this year. usually we get to just sing a few lines of music that our music director gives us that is actually from the show (ex. you're trying out for maria you sing a part of "Tonight" or Anita you sing a part from "America"). It really depends on what part you are going out for(leads!)... always set high goals for yourself!!!

    *soprano songs/ mezzo soprano*

    songs you could sing:

Green Finch and linnet bird- Sweeney todd

Wishing you were somehow here again- phantom of the opera

i dreamed a dream- les Mis

    colors of the wind- Pocahontas

  2. Ouch. Your director is ambitious, and you have a tough job ahead.

Pick something you like, just a popular song, one you can sing with comfort. That's if you just want chorus. Include staging. Have a friend/adult watch you and give suggestions on movement, posture, and gesture. Practice your audition endlessly.

If you want to see what you can do, take a risk, listen carefully to the play soundtrack, watch the excellent movie adaptation, and practice "Somewhere", the most poignant and beautiful song Bernstein ever wrote. If you hit it, you'll get the part of Maria, and go down in school history. Go for it! Best of luck, break a leg.
