Question:

Audition help for a young guy?

I am 17, and going into my senior year in high school. I can't seem to find any good monologues or songs from shows for guys my age. I haven't had the opportunity to see as many shows as I'd like, so I don't have a wide array of knowledge when it comes to shows with characters that I could possibly play. I am desperately trying to find monologues and songs for audition to colleges, but it seems to be in vain. Can anyone suggest some monologues and/or songs, and tell me the shows they are from? I am a versatile tenor, and am relatively small, and thus need younger roles (15-20 yrs). All help is greatly appreciated!

  1. Well it really specifically depends on the show you are auditioning for, but if you are just looking to build your repitoire, I can try to make a few suggestions... I am a musical theater person more than straight acting, so I will just suggest songs.

Lost in the Wilderness from Children of Eden

I Think We Got Love from Zanna Don't (it's a duet, but you can get a tenor 32 bar out of it if it works for you)

I Want to Make Magic from Fame the Musical

If I Can't Love Her from Beauty and the Beast (since you are small, I don't know if you would play the Beast but if there ever is an audition this song would work for, it is a GREAT tenor song if done right)

Light of the World from Godspell

Fortune Favors the Brave from Aida (or really any song Radames sings in this show.. great tenor guy)

Take a listen to these and see what you like and what you don't like. If you like a particular song, or the way the characters voice and your voice mesh, then do more research on that show to see what other songs the character sings, or what other songs in the show work for you. Do some research yourself as well... expand your knowledge of musical theater as much as you can. They occasionally have Broadway soundtracks at the public library, so check there and give the CDs a listen. Another good way to become more familiar with musical theater is obviously by seeing shows. You don't need to get up to NY... go to other high school's productions, or even Middle School productions. Local theaters also do musicals occasionally, so keep an eye out for those. If it is possible financially, see touring Broadway shows when they visit nearby. Good luck, and I hope you can get some monologue tips!
