Auditory Processing Delay (APD) and Above Average Reading skills?

My 8 year old has several symptoms of APD, and has had for 4 years now. Several teachers who live in our neighborhood have also pointed this out to us. She had an IEP at school because she was found to have no expresive vocabulary. She has sinced been taken out of speech services. I have noticed a decline in her math scores and that in the auditory parts of her computer lab, where she works alone she is spending 80 minutes on each task rather than 7 like the others that are not auditory. Had a confrence with the teacher who refered us to the school psychologist, have another meeting set up to begin testing. She did state however that my daughter has a higher than average reading level and kids with APD usually do not have this. Is this true or is it just a possible symptom? I am tyring to find information to ensure that my child is not overlooked when she genuinely has a need.

  1. My son is seven and was just diagnosed with apd and add, Reason for his testing for the APD was due to his academics in school. He can not read over a level 7 and the year for 1st grade is nearly over. I wondered why the school was not really seeing the red flags, His teacher simply wanted him tested for a LD however the board refused b/c he was already on the IEP to help him. Umm NO LUCK with that! So as my sons advocate I started to research and then paid about 800 bucks at our local childrens hospital to have him tested for it. During that test she observed him and said that the ADD test is also very warrented. So within 3 weeks we learned he had both! I believe it would be rare to have her reading ability and have APD, however if you feel in your gut she has it.. I would do the test. As a mom I knew something was not right I just did not know what it was and I went with my gut and here we are. I wish you all the best and hope you get your answers, the sooner you do the better you can help your daughter!

  2. Are you asking the school psychologist to test your daughter to find out her IQ (they do several tests that really high-light the student's strengths and weaknesses)?  If so, then the special education teacher will test your daughter academically to see where her strengths and weaknesses are there (all the questions are asked orally in all the tests I know and have used, except math computation).  The school nurse should get a complete medical history from you.  Then everyone gets together and they discuss the results of their tests.

If you don't agree with their assessment, you have the right to appeal, just be prepared for a fight if necessary.  You may even have to get an advocate to help you.  Most of the time this isn't necessary, but since you are fighting for your daughter's rights, nothing is too much to do for her.
