Audley Harrison accuses David Haye of failing to improve as a fighter
Audley Harrison has attempted to get under WBA heavyweight champion David Haye’s skin by saying Haye is the same fighter he was when he was knocked out by Carl Thompson six years ago.
“Nothing has changed,” Harrison told The Telegraph.
Harrison is set to face Haye on November 13 for his title at the Manchester Evening News Arena. He vows to take the title that has guaranteed Haye a top spot in the heavyweight division.
"I'm preparing for a 100-per-cent David Haye. He is the same fighter who lost to Carl Thompson. He's got quick hands, is fast and explosive, but he's still vulnerable. Nothing has changed," Harrison emphasized.
While Haye has been training for the fight in London, Harrison is busy working in Big Bear, a famous high-altitude training site in California. He made a note of contrasting their two situations, and said that his decision to isolate himself will ultimately
be significant in the fight.
"I'm definitely going to come in fit, like I did against Danny Williams and Richel Hersisia. I will be able to come through extreme punches and stay fit until the later rounds. The solitude up here has allowed me to be completely focused on training and
boxing.” He added: “There is chaos around David where he is training but he likes it that way and that's what I was like in 2004. David likes drama. I'm not going to make excuses for David, like he lost because he trained in London and not at altitude.”
Harrison is the current European heavyweight champion. He will be fighting Haye as a significant underdog. In 2000, while competing at the Olympics, he won the gold medal, an achievement some say he has never been able to live up to. The bout with Haye
will give Harrison a chance to quiet naysayers and reassert himself as a prominent performer.
