We're considering going on our honeymoon to Jamaica in August because this is when we have vacation time. We realize that this is hurricane season.

Have you ever been to Jamaica in August?

What was your experience?

  1. Don't know your age but be very careful - have stopped there several times via cruise etc. the area is downright scarey. They crime is high / too many beggers / its dirty  / guard your cash

  2. I have not been to Jamaica, but have been thru a hurricane-there is no way i would want to go thru that in Jamaica or on a cruise ship, if that is how you are planning on going. Consider another option and save Jamaica for another trip!

PS-super freakin hot in the Carribbean in August, mon!

  3. I have vacationed in Negril in August and September, and it was fine. There have been major hurricanes in  Jamaica in mid-August through mid-September: Hurricanes Dean, Ivan and Gilbert.

I don't know if  travel  insurance covers hurricanes for you trip, but you might check.

Also, check with your your hotel to confirm what their policies are if you need to cancel.  Check the hurricane forecasts a week or so before you go.

  4. No.  I was in Jamaica in December.  But, I just wanted to tell you to beware of the crabs.  They walk around freely there and can easily pinch your feet as you walk about.  They are in the drinking places along the beach.  Sometimes you have to step over them as you walk.

  5. Ive been to St Croix in August and the humidity was really thick and it was way tropical. Look out for the heat. I guess it depends on if you can take it or not.

Double check now to make sure your hotel does have air conditioning (you'd be surprised).

I'm from South Texas, so it wasnt a huge step, and I kind of like heat and humidity.

  6. Just think - How many people have you heard coming back from a Jamaican A.I. resort saying "We got stuck in a hurricane. We'd never go back there?"

    Few or none.

Make your booking and enjoy yourselves. Although a hurricane is always a possibility in the caribbean, the chances of being caught in one are pretty SLIM. Here are a few facts -

    1. Hurricanes are a problem in almost any caribbean country, and even in florida. They also affect other parts of the world but they arent called 'hurricanes'.The risk of any one island being affected by a hurricane during YOUR stay is VERY low.

    2. Top Jamaican hotel chains have significant hurricane guarantees. Its a no risk policy. Ask your travel agent for more info.

    3. Most hotels will refund you if a hurricane happens to hit in the middle of your stay. You would literally get a your entire vacation back in cash or get the same amount of days free at a future date (even if you were staying for two weeks they will give you back the entire two weeks in some cases).

    4. Hurricanes are NOT instantaneous. You can usually monitor the weather and watch the hurricane moving for several days before it threatens jamaica. Ask your travel agent about being able to change your booking last minute if there is a risk of a hurricane. Sandals is a good option because if possible you can change to a hotel resort on an island that wouldnt be directly affected by the hurricane AT NO ADDITIONAL COST for the accomodation.

    5. If you get stuck at the hotel during a hurricane, you don't have to worry. Top hotels such as Couples and Sandals are VERY well equipped to deal with hurricanes with virtually NO risk of injury for guests. If it happens that you are caught there, you will only have an 'exciting experience'. So long as you follow the guidelines of the hotels staff, you WILL survive without injury.

The point of all this is ASK YOUR TRAVEL AGENT. I personally don't think i would set travel plans 6 months away on the basis of a potential hurricane.

  7. I've always been there in January. I recommend stayin at an all inclusive resort. I don't know where you live so I can't really recommend an agent. From Milwaukee, we use eiher Apple Vacations or Funjet. They use the same airline, Ryan International and the same resort, Starfish Trelawny, which is half way between Montego Bay and Ocho Rios.
