August bank holiday ideas?

Me and my mum want to go away somewhere for August bank hol. We wanted to maybe go to a nice city for the day, see a stage show/ go to the theatre, stay overnight then return the next day. Even though we're considering the obvious (London) we're looking for a few alternatives. Does anyone have any suggestions to the city or show? thanks.
