Augustin Gensse beats Marsel Ilhan in the third round qualifiers of the French Open
World number 178, Augustin Gensse of France defeated the 21st seeded Turkish Marsel Ilhan in the third round of the qualifying draws of the French Open in Paris on Saturday. The French competitor won the contest as Ilhan retired while competing
in the second set for the reason of his shoulder injury to give an easy passage to Gensse in the game.
Gensse was brilliant throughout the curtailed version of the matchup and showed his excellent tennis skills in front of his home crowd. The French cruised through the opening set with ease, winning it 6-4 and was leading 4-0 in the second set when the unfortunate
event took place. The Turkish opponent was on the verge of defeat when he felt a severe pain in his right shoulder and soon afterwards forfeited the match to Gensse, allowing him a pass to the main draws of the Grand Slam event.
The game lasted for barely one hour before Ilhan quits it for his agonising shoulder pain. He competed well in the opening set to give some tough time to the Frenchman but was in a terrible condition in the every next set before he finally retired from the
matchup. The Turk has been in a brilliant form in the qualifying rounds of Roland Garros, defeated both of his initial round opponents in straight sets but couldn’t put a similar kind of show this time round.
Signs of fatigue and discomfort from Ilhan became clear in the opening games of the second set, as the Turk started to commit a number of unforced errors and easy mistakes. He had only two opportunities to crack in a serve break and he converted one in the
opener but it went all in vain, as he had to suffer four out of five serve breaks from the crafty French opponent.
Ilhan was led down in the contest by his silly mistakes throughout the game, as the Turk committed 21 unforced errors as compared to 12 from Gensse. The Turk only registered 6 winners in the entire matchup, while his opponent struck 12 winners en route to
victory. The French serve reached to 78 per cent in the contest, with Gensse winning 23 out of 29 first serve points to get the competitive edge over his opponent.
Less can be said as what would have happened had Ilhan not abandoned the game due to injury, as he was just two games away from defeat in the second set. Gensse will face the Dutch qualifier, Thomas Schoorel, in his opening round matchup at the French Open.
