Aulis surname?

I was going through some pictures my grandmother left me that I hadn't seen yet and I was very surprised to see pictures from my early ancestors in the late 1800's and early 1900's. Behind one of the fold outs of the picture (the oldest ones are made of a cardboard and have flaps that fold out kind of like a greeting card) I found a piece of paper that says when my great great great grandpa (may be more greats lol) came to this country with his family and it states the name of the captain and the ship. However, it doesn't state where they came from and I've searched just about everything including the immigration cards for that ship but nothing!

Is anyone out there aware of what country origin "Aulis" comes from.

Originally, it was Greek--note that it is actually a place in Greece, close to the village of Vathy.

However, my guess is that it was Finnish.

They might not be in the immigration cards, because immigration records back then were pretty shoddy. You checked the ship manifest, right? (The ship log of passengers.) This was also not a great example of good record-keeping, so don't be surprised if you don't mind anything there.

There are a couple ports they could have left from in/near Finland--Turku, Hamburg, Port Arthur, Bremerhaven...and others.

ALSO note that they very well may have changed their last name when they got to America, so they might be listed under a different name in ship records and whatnot.

Aulis appears to be ancient Greek in origin.

Aulis in Latin means, A Praxidicae.

(The Praxidicae were three Ancient Greek Godesses "The Executors of Justice").

Aulis is an ancient port of east-central Greece in Boeotia. According to tradition, it was the embarkation point for the Greek fleet during the Trojan War.

Aulis is also a genus of ladybird beetle.

As a surname it seems to be in several countries, England, Finland.

In Finnish it is a name which means "helpfull", "willing".

As a Roman name, it is possibly derived from Etruscan ; Avile/Aule/Avle, of unknown meaning. Sometimes also

connected to the latin ; Aula/Olla, meaning "palace".

It can be both a forename and a surname.
