Aussie Billy Dib collects unanimous win over Mexican Juan Antonio Rodriguez – Boxing news
Billy Dib, the IBF featherweight champion, collected an impressive unanimous decision win over Mexican proud Juan Antonio Rodriguez, the former WBC Youth World featherweight champion, in a 10-round non-title bout held on July 13, 2012.
The duo headlined the pay-per-view organised and promoted by Billy Hussein of Team Hussein, putting forth the Aussie boxing fans an impressive showdown to remember. The event was televised live on Australian Fox TV, witnessing Billel Dib take on Hwi-Jong
Kim in a 10-round bout for the vacant Australian super featherweight title.
The event was held at Orion Function Centre in Campsie, New South Wales, Australia. Aussie Billy held up to his reputation and during the whole 10-round wild ride did not allow the Mexican pounder to overwhelm him.
Dib, currently ranked as world’s sixth best featherweight, did not face any difficulty in setting the pace and dominating the bout. The initial eight-rounds were completely won by the 26-year-old lad.
Despite the fact that Billy, also known as ‘The Kid’, possessed the experience advantage, Juan did retaliate with some good shots, stunning Dib in rounds three and four. Also known as ‘Zurdo’ or ‘El Mozo’, Antonio used his southpaw advantage optimally and
pushed Dib several times to the ropes.
Billy, an orthodox, did face a bit difficulty in accommodating to Juan’s southpaw stance. Once Dib understood the strategy followed by the short-heighted Juan, the ring witnessed Billy batter Antonio with his quick jabs and fists.
In the speed factor, it was the Aussie lad who overshadowed the southpaw Juan. Antonio, who was entering his 25th career bout, as a desperate measure, leashed his full might and power to gain much-needed points.
The strategy would have helped if Juan had adopted this stance from the very beginning of the bout. Antonio capitalised Dib’s fatigued and worn out body and from ninth round and onwards dominated most of the time.
At the end of the day, it was Dib who emerged victorious by collecting scores of 97-94, 98-92, and 99-92 on all three cards. After the impressive win, Dib while sharing his thoughts commented, “I had to graft for that win but I worked extremely hard in the
gym and that was how I was able to get through that fight.”
With this win, Dib has collected his 35th victory whereas Juan has received his fourth career loss.
