Aussie Jason Day eager to win his first major at the US Open
Another test looms over the head of the brightest of Australian golfers Jason Day when he will tee off for the second major of the season, the US Open. The young golfer is coming out of a jaw-dropping runner-up finish in his debut at the Masters in April
where he was playing for the first time to gate-crash into Augusta’s high profile club.
“This is not a tournament that's a sprint, it is definitely a marathon,” Day said. “We'll see if I can be patient enough. Hopefully I can be and I don't convince myself to go at stupid pins or parts of fairways.I am excited because I like playing harder
courses. I like the challenge.”
Day started off the season with a brilliant finish at the WGC Accenture Match Play Championship at Tucson, Arizona and went all the way to the third round to finally give in to the winner Luke Donald. He started off his bid at Augusta with a disappointing
start but quickly consolidated his defense and finished 12-under, the lowest score for a first-time participant.
Although the Aussie fell two strokes short of the leader Charl Schwartzel of South Africa, this was Day’s best performance in any major championship and he was also leading the tournament at one stage. Despite of his legendary achievement at Augusta, Day
is well aware of his weaknesses and hopes to keep an eye on them at Congressional this week.
“I have to stay patient here because it's so tough. Maybe you can get frustrated with a bogey but you can't give up on yourself because it's not likely to put you way back.” Day was talking to the media men on Wednesday June 14. “The cut line could be well
over par so I have to get into the mental grind and be aware pars can be like birdies.”
Day turned professional in 2006 and joined the PGA Tour right from the start when his sponsor’s TaylorMade and Addidas acquired a playing exemption for the player. He won the Legend Financial Group Classic on the Nationwide Tour to become the youngest player
to win on any of the three PGA Tour sanctioned events at the age of 19.
For the next year, Day had a sloppy season and his playing status on the PGA was in dire straits when he went over to close Puerto Rico open with runners up finish to secure his playing status for the next year.
This is for the first time Day will be contesting in the US Open and that also on one of the longest courses in the events history. He posted a joint tenth finish in last year’s PGA Championship and is hoping to break through the ranks this time to win his
first major title.
Currently ranked at 18th in world rankings, he will be facing the sport’s toughest challenge from the top golfers from around the world.
