Aussie Robert Allenby says Tiger Woods can never be as great as he once was

With the entire buzz associated with Tiger Woods’ latest resurgence in the Australian Open, it was perhaps too difficult for the Australian star Robert Allenby not to say anything regarding the stunning comeback of Woods. Also part of the International Team
in next week’s President’s Cup, Allenby believes though Woods might have pulled in impressive performance so far in the event, he will never be as great as he used to be.
"He looks in full control of everything he's doing (but) I don't think he'll ever be as good as he was in 2000. I've seen him at his absolute best. That was a different human being. No-one will ever be close to that."
Allenby received taunts from the US Team Captain Fred Couples a few weeks back when Couples shot back at International Team Captain Greg Norman for selecting Allenby as Captain’s pick. Couples was trying to contain the outburst of criticism from Norman who
constantly hit back at Couples for selecting Woods on the team. Allenby’s latest rhetoric against the 14-major-winner may find its roots to Couples criticism.
Woods pulled in a stunning bogey free rounds of five-under, 67 on consecutive days to grab the lead at the latest Australian Open at Lakes Golf Club in Sydney and his recent upsurge easily triggered panic within the ranks of the International team. In case
Woods goes all the way to lift the title, there would definitely be a renewed impetus for him to push for a glorious performance in the upcoming President’s Cup event scheduled at the Royal Melbourne next week. Allenby, however, also praised the recent performance
of the former world number one.
"Tiger's playing great. He's on his way back, no doubt about it. He's definitely looking good for the weekend. If he keeps going the way he's going, he probably should win," he added. “He played with no fear, whereas he plays golf now with a bit of caution."
Woods was selected for the President’s Cup several months ahead of the event and Couples was criticized for leaning in favour of his long time friend. Keegan Bradley, now a two-time winner on the PGA Tour in his rookie start, was one of the strong contenders
for the selection and was completely ignored by Couples. Bradley has not only won the PGA Championship this year but also went over to win the PGA Grand Slam in Bermuda last month.
Woods on the other hand, has not won a single title in the last more than two years. He missed the halfway cut in two major events this year and has now dropped out of the top-50 in the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR) for the first time in 15 years.
