I'm doing a research bit on Australia & our culture, and was wondering if any of you guys could help me with a few ideas towards the culture & every day life aspects of Australian life.

I want things that people actually do, not their stereotypes, and nothing too straight forward either, cricket, barbecues, surfing, vegemite, etc.

Because if it's straight forward, I've probably got it already.

& yes, I'm Australian.

  1. RSL clubs and the like are unique to Australia.  We also have more poker machines that anywhere else in the world.

  2. I'm talking about NSW here..

    They bully the Japanese.

Upper middle onwards don't want to speak with Aussie accent.

Upper middle onwards like to spend time in Tuscany, Italy although Tuscany is very similar to Hunters Hill.

At dinner parties they talk only about their recent overseas trips, new property purchase and discuss current affairs copying what the Sydney Morning Herald says (in Sydney).

Their mind and opinions are dominated and controlled by the Sydney Morning Herald.

They don't know the correct table manners.

    Tall poppy syndromes.

Men have high pitch voice regardless of their body size.

    They are strong and resilient.

They want to be fair and mean well, but often so ignorant that they appear to be arrogant.

They are helpful and kind to their friends and families - very similar to Irish.

  3. also, we're so lucky to have all of the different foods available to us, like Indian, Thai, etc. I'm living in the states right now, and it is SO hard to find authentic asian food.

also, families are a lot closer in Aus it seems to me. Everyone respects their grandparents a lot more, they dont just put them in retirement homes like they do in America.
