Hi,

I'm situated in a Sydney outer semi-rural area. I recently changed from "unwired" broadband to Optus "in Zone" wireless. When I first connected the new in zone modem, it showed very good signal strength and ran fast as.

Gradually, after the cooling off period ran out on the new 24 month contract, the darn thing started slowing down and the signal strength got weaker.

Now after 3 weeks, the signal strength light has finally blinked out altogether and the service keeps cutting out every 15 minutes. (Aaaaggh)

I took the modem to an optus shop but they said I needed to send it away by snail mail to be checked.

(there's a couple of weeks down-time right there)

Anyone got any ideas?

PS.

I have a cat 5 cable connected up to the (switched off) unwired aerial which I have mounted on my tv mask on the roof.

It is in a plastic weather-proof box up there. Could I run the optus modem from up there where I get a stronger signal using that existing cable?

  1. possibly but the wind and weather would play havoc with it

  2. I think it is more likely to be the service than the modem. People I have spoken to here in Queensland are experiencing the same issues with Virgin wireless.

Have a quick discussion with the Dept. of Fair Trading, I reckon it's a legal issue not a technical one.
