it has made me feel so proud to read your answers and realise how many aussies are REAL aussies and do NOT want to be classed, in any shape or form,as being in any way similar to americans........as a traveller to many parts of the world i am totally embarresed to be mistaken as an american....i do not hesitate to put people right and proudly say i am AUSTRALIAN.....long live the aussi

We fortunately still have our differences but it is very annoying when people continually alter our speech to be more like Americans - saying "zee" instead of "zed", spell-checks that continually change "travelling" to "traveling", people calling their obstetrician their "OBGYN" etc etc

A lot of American culture trickles into Australia like tv shows, music, movies, fashion etc and even its litigious nature but the Aussie people are unique and arent as arrogant or pushy as Americans. And thats why i love Australia, for its people.

Australia has no comparison to the United States whatsoever!

Yes, we have some of your fast food outlets and chain stores, as well as music but thats because those companies and artists came out here, same as in Britan, Japan and New Zealand.

Most of our clothing are Australian Bands, some of our best fast food outlets are Australian and even with a very slight american culture here, we generally put our own twist to it.

dont forget that we have our own Meat Pie, we have our own unique football code, an airline which is reconisable where ever it is in the world and top rate girls on our beaches.....

and hey, if it wasnt for us, Man would not have walked on the moon (in 1969 anyway) as we had the radio tracker in Parkes, there would be no 'sports utility vhecle' or what we call a ute, no motorised lawn mower and no aircraft blackbox!

To say that Australia is anything like america is OUTRAGES!

No. I think we are all aware of that some of amercan culture has influenced our lives. how ever i would like to hope that we never become like america. we are to unique, i love my BBQ'a beer and flannos, thongs and our aussie slang. we are down to earth and friendly. aussie aussie aussie, oi oi oi.

Definately some aspects of our culture are becoming Americanised, but I think Australians are actually becoming more aware and more proud of our differences.

Our culture is very much influenced by American culture by music, movies, TV, magazines, etc. But, as it is so obvious on here, I think many Australians are proud that we are different from the USA, and we are mindful of retainig our special culture that is so different from the USA. We are Aussies, and proud to be so! If we are aware that we do not want to become like Americans, then I think that we will not.

Its a shame but yes it looks like it...just reading the news this week at least four shootings within Oz.......the news reports on telly in the evening are always protecting an asian head under a jumper. Since the influx of Sudanese and anything else from Africa is going to see a huge crime rate, its happening now, wake up you bleeding heart liberal Aholes..bring back Robert Menzies and the white Australia policy!

I see what you mean.... I hope we will not become a mini USA.

I see America as an Melting pot -> everything blends into each other.

I see Australia as a Mosaic -> we keep our own ethical cultures but together we make a very pretty picture. Australia is WAY more multicultural then the US.

I also have major problems with the religious craziness over there. In Australia I find religion is not as integrated and advertised as in the US (especially the Middle). Nobody really cares what faith everyone else follows, as far as I experienced it Aussis respect other believes and do not meddle with other peoples faith.

I believe that Australia needs to get its head out of the US bud. Only because the English could not support us in the second World War and the US did doesn’t mean we need to shift our submission from the United Kingdom to the US. I believe that we are fine as what we are and we can stand for ourself and I also believe we need to keep up to give our kinds the right tradition of being Australian.

Yes and it has been since WW2.  Breaking away from the British Empire and having a stronger American influence has shaped our country into what it is today.

I hope we continue to take the better aspects of American society, such as technology and research and leave the worst back in America, such as Country & Western, Basketball and Seinfeld.

No, I don't think so; not yet at least. I do worry that it might happen in the future though if some attitudes don't change. A very large number of young people seem to think that the US is the centre of the universe and all things wonderful, and don't seem to appreciate the wonderful and safe lifestyle we have here. They watch only American TV, see only American movies and worship American celebrities. They seem to do these things to the exclusion of participating in Australian life in any but the most peripheral ways.

I hate to see how many American executives are brought in to run our large companies and they often seem to be chosen over very able and well qualified Australians. This must stop if we are to stem the tide of creeping Americanisation. We must have Australians with Australian ideals running the show.

Fortunately, I think that our sense of national identity is becoming stronger overall and the young people who are proud to be Australian are our brightest and best. It is they who will keep our national identity and prevail over the shallow American wannabes.

Apologies for moving a bit OT, but I believe that an Australian Republic would focus everyone on Australia and what it means to be Australian and that can only be good for our future as an independent nation rather than an American satellite.

The problem is solely the entertainment industry. Take away Americas Stars and it has nothing. Nothing the general population would want to know about. Also Australia doesnt have enough of an entertainment industry to get through breaking artists, like the Veronicas who live in the States now. Even Gabriella Cilmi Had to go to England to break out. Even Australias big actors who start here have to go there to continue to make films. Without the entertainment industry, America has nothing flash.

I'm not an Aussie, but I hope you do not become as rude as Americans are.  Especially those on either coast.  The mid-Americans from the small towns and farms in the Midwest are the best!  Salt of the earth.  So much better that New Yorkers and California Coast residents.  Bless the Aussies.  My son lives there, and I hope to as well.
