  1. thats a matter of opinion , kinghitz.

    http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_are_the_m...

btw i can't say anything about oz.Perhaps your right because they have such a great rivalry with Eng and Ind at cricket and their newspapers are crapping on all about cricket unless they have AFL ar something.Harbhajan and Symonds controversy was a huge sensation over there as far as i can tell.

considering the numbers.undoubtedly cricket has more fans( an estimated 3.3 billion).even if you exclude india's 1 billion population, cricket is still more popular(worldwide)than rugby.

as for soccer,no wonder boy.its played in almost every part of world.3.5 billion ppl either play or watch soccer.it wins to cricket just by a whisker though.

And if you compare popularity of both these sports in my country(NZ), rugby would win hands down.Even i'm a huge rugby fan.but that doesn't mean we give less importance to cricket.me, my dad and all my friends are into cricket.cricket is quite popular here but not as rugby.we have more rugby fans here.

in the long run it can displace rugby if our  cricket team wins world cup t20 or some major cricket tournament.t20 is spreading very fast and has proven to be more exciting than rugby.

summarizing cricket is #2 and soccer is #1 as far as popularity is concerned.and cricket is far more popular than rugby.

  2. Rugby isn't very popular in Victoria so thats probably the reason why cricket is just a little more famous than Rugby!! But cricket is played in every state and is loved in just about every state unlike Rugby!!

  3. eh?    154 countries play rugby,knights .

    what world are u from?

well in tis world we have 150 countries. and btw over 100 countries play cricket  and rugby ony 20 nations play.

  4. In Australia, cricket is the one true national sport.  Rugby is played in all states but is a minor football code although it is getting larger mainly at the expense of Rugby League.

Rugby is the major international football code that is played in Australia.  Worldwide Rugby is played at an international level in 115 countries although it true to say that there are only 8 or so top level countries, of which Australia is one.

However it is worth noting that the Rugby World Cup is almost as popular with TV audiences as the summer Olympics. This would make it more popular than the Cricket World Cup.

All in all cricket would have a larger following that rugby. If we consider the huge number of people who follow cricket from the sub-continent as well as the Australia, England, WI, NZ etc, etc.

Edit: Blake, there are 115 countries registered with the IRU so there are at least 115 countries playing rugby in some format or other.  There are 195 countries in the world at the time of writing.  So I guess my planet is Earth.  What's yours?

  5. no rugby is a huge sport in all countries the newspaper people try to make things up just for a great story and to get peoples attention so the newspaper isnt boring

  6. How is this verdict reached? Is it by number of people who socially parcipate on weekends etc.

If so yes. Soccer is by far the most popular with cricket being 2nd. This is cause you can particpate in soccer and cricket socially and enjoy the game with out being a super player. Union/Leauge on the other hand have far less particpants cause of the gretaer risk of injury ( its a bit hard to go to work on Monday when you have a broken leg in 6 places) and you cant really go out for a social run around when you have a 100kg giant trying to take your head off. (Not having a go at Leauge, I love it, but their the facts, thats why I stopped playing at junior level but kept playing cricket through senoirs)

Senoir cricket teams in Sydney competion (Park, not grade) usually have As, Bs, and C,s with any where up to 6 teams in each division then you have Grade with similar format.

Soccer teams go all the way up to over 40s divison and can have any where up to 15 teams in each bracket (thats alot of players)

When I lived in Sydney my local area senior rugby league competiom had A grade and struglled to field an A reserve competion.Above that their was Jim Beam cup where players recieved payment and Fleg for U21s representives then pretty much onto resreve and first grade. You then had U21s, u18s, U16s etc in park footy and usually only one team in each bracket.

With the popularity of AFL growing in Sydney, if JRL wants to survie they need to put in a weight divison, not age cause parents do not want to see a 80kg 12 year old crushing their 30kg kid.

With AFL having less front on contact it is slowly becoming the popular choice of the football code in Sydney and may compete in the top 3 for most popular sport (cringe)

  7. Most popular sports in Australia is Cricket.

Most popular sports in the world are Soccer, cricket and  rugby in that order.

  8. Rugby is played in all countries? I didn't know that. In Oceania Rugby maybe a big sport. Parts of Africa, and some countries of Europe, Rugby maybe played to large no. of spectators. That's it about Rugby.

But I have no inkling about the popularity of Cricket in Australia or popularity of Rugby, or what is more popular.

  9. Of course cricket is more popular, it is played in all states as opposed to rugby which is only played in NSW & QLD. A recent poll said that tennis was our most popular sport & cricket second, but I don't believe that for a moment as tennis is only played (internationally) for a week or so each year. Anyways, rugby(union) is nowhere in the reckoning.

  10. Well from where i'm sitting yes cricket is more popular over here..

In my state ,rugby is'nt very popular at all..
