Austen Thompson clinches Men’s 400yard IM gold: Day two – NCAA Division 1 Championship Meet
Austen Thompson of Arizona clinched gold medal of the Men’s 400yard Individual Medley (IM) on day two of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division 1 Championship Meet at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center in Seattle, Wash on Friday,
March 23.
Thompson, who qualified into the playoff as top contender for gold medal, lived up to the expectations of his fans by accomplishing gold medal of the discipline with an effort of 3 minutes and 39.15 seconds.
His scintillating effort remained almost two seconds ahead of Kyle Whitaker, who sustained his second fastest position and snatched silver medal of the discipline by producing an effort of 3 minutes and 41.37 seconds.
Subsequently, Michael Weiss of Wisconsin, who qualified as fourth finest swimmer into the playoff, elevated his efforts and seized third position of the discipline by posting 3 minutes and 43.12 seconds.
Next was the Men’s 100yard butterfly, where Thomas Shields maintained his pace in the final round and stepped on the victory stand for gold medal by producing an effort of 44.76 seconds.
With his gruelling effort, he remained 1.01 seconds ahead of Giles Smith of Arizona, who reached the medal rostrum for silver medal by clocking a time of 45.77 seconds. Smith was trailed by Marcin Cieslak of Florida, who ended third by clocking 45.86 seconds.
The third event of the session was Men’s 200yard freestyle, where Daxon Hill of Texas upset his challengers by snaring the title of the freestyle event with the timing of 1 minute and 32.51 seconds.
He was trailed by Dimitri Colupaev of Southern California, who secured silver medal of the discipline by hitting the wall in a time of 1 minute and 32.91 seconds. Colupaev was chased by Joao De Lucca of Louisville, who remained 0.58 seconds behind and followed
him on the victory stand for bronze medal by producing an effort of 1 minute and 33.49 seconds.
In addition, the crowd admired ruthless efforts of all finalists in their respective discipline while the position holders were called upon the victory stand for awards and accolades at prize ceremony after the session.
