Austen Thompson dominates Men’s 400yard IM heats: Day two – NCAA Division 1 Championship Meet
Austen Thompson of Arizona dominated the qualification round of Men’s 400yard Individual Medley (IM) on second day of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division 1 Championship Meet at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center in Seattle,
Wash on Friday, March 23.
Thompson remained almost one body length ahead of his following swimmer, Kyle Whitaker of Michigan and hit the finishing wall with the timing of 3 minutes and 43.31 seconds to qualify in the final round as top fastest swimmer.
In contrast, Whitaker stayed 1.02 seconds slower from his former finisher and transpired on the finishing end with the timing of 3 minutes and 44.33 seconds. The third fastest spot of the event was obtained by Samuel Trahin of Indiana, who completed his
swim in a time of 3 minutes and 44.49 seconds.
Trahin was chased by Michael Weiss of Wisconsin, who concluded his race with an effort of 3 minutes and 44.63 seconds and entered the final round as fourth fastest swimmer.
Next was the Men’s 100yard butterfly prelims, where Thomas Shields of California outperformed his challengers on the finishing end and proved his eligibility for first position.
Shields faced tough competition from Giles Smith of Arizona but with his utter determination and gruelling efforts, he ended his swim in a top fastest time of 45.58 seconds for top position.
Giles stayed just 0.05 seconds slower from his preceding swimmer and tapped the finishing end with an effort of 45.63 seconds. He was chased by Daniel Madwed of Michigan, who remained 0.41 seconds away from Smith and qualified into the playoff as third finest
swimmer by touching the wall in a time of 46.04 seconds.
With his impeccable swim, Madwed enjoyed an advantage of 0.16 seconds over Mathias Gydesen of California, who submitted a time of 46.20 seconds and settled on the finishing blockade as fourth best swimmer. James Feigen of Texas stayed just 0.01 seconds slower
and posted 46.21 seconds for fifth position.
Furthermore, Shields aroused hopes of his fans by expressing that he will try to accomplish the same in the final round of the event.
