Austin Collie will sit out against San Diego Chargers as precaution
Indianapolis Colts slotback Austin Collie will not dress this Sunday 28 November against the San Diego Chargers. In a game that’s shaping up to be an offensive shootout, the Colts will be missing one of their top receivers.
Collie suffered a devastating concussion on 7 November after he was crushed by Philadelphia Eagles safety Kurt Coleman. He missed the following game against Cincinnati, but was medically cleared to return last weekend against the New England Patriots. Collie
was pulled from the game before the end of the first half for precautionary reasons.
The team released a statement, saying Collie "encountered symptoms from his previous injury". Team president Bill Polian said a hit during the Patriots game made Collie "uncomfortable."
The Colts will err on the side of caution with their talented receiver, and have declared him out for this week’s contest. Collie suffered post-concussion symptoms during the New England game, and with the NFL’s focus on protecting players who’ve suffered
head trauma, this seemed like the correct decision.
Colts head coach Jim Caldwell has explained, “They (team medical personnel) were just being conservative and watching his symptoms and things of that nature."
Rookie Blair White, who filled in admirably for Collie during his absence, will be the team’s slotback against San Diego. This season, he has 14 receptions for 150 yards and three touchdowns, and has gained the trust of quarterback Peyton Manning.
In other injury news, running back Joseph Addai participated in non-contact drills, but was ruled out for Sunday’s game. He had suffered a nerve injury in his left shoulder which he injured during a 17 October game. Often-injured safety Bob Sanders will
continue to be sidelined this week. He hasn’t played since week one, when he suffered a biceps injury.
The Colts signed former Chicago Bears safety Al Afalava for depth purposes, after current backup Chip Vaughn was placed on injured reserve with an ankle injury, effectively ending his season. Afalava will mostly see action on special teams.
