Austin GP chiefs want event be moved to 2013 along with New Jersey, Canadian GP – Formula 1 news
Austin Grand Prix chiefs say they are ready to move the inaugural race back to 2013, after the project marred by different hurdles is most likely not going to host the race in 2012.
It has been a difficult week for the Austin circuit organisers as initially reports broke out that the event is in jeopardy. Although the reports were denied earlier by the management and the Formula 1 boss Bernie Ecclestone. It was later revealed that in
fact, there is no longer a contract between Formula One Management and the Austin circuit organisers as it faces difficult financial woes.
It seems probable now that a return of Grand Prix to the United States will have to take a back seat for another year. While admitting to the crisis, the organisers have posed another bid to be able to host the event in 2013. United States is already in
line to host a Grand Prix event in 2013 in New Jersey, which should make more sense for the Austin circuit to host it in the same year, but it remains to be seen how the situation shapes up.
Circuit of the Americas president Steve Sexton said that a year will give them enough time to work on all the things they missed to be well prepared for 2013.
“We have been excited for and working towards a 2012 USGP race and now understand that Mr Ecclestone is interested in moving the Austin race to 2013,” he said. “We know the US market is important to the teams and their sponsors and 2013 certainly allows
time for the Circuit of the Americas to be ready.”
While the race promoter Tavo Hellmund has been open about acknowledging that the circuit has been in breach of the contract with Ecclestone, while the F1 boss has been nothing but compromising throughout the whole ordeal.
He was still adamant that the situation can be salvaged and believes that it would be a good idea for the race to be held next year along with the New Jersey street circuit and the Canadian Grands Prix due to be held in 2013.
