Austin Jackson sparks as Detroit Tigers defeat Oakland Athletics 3-0 - MLB Update
Detroit Tigers’ centre-fielder, Austin Jackson had an extraordinary day with the bat as he went 2-for-5 with an average of .248 and hit one RBI including two runs in the Tigers’ 3-0 victory against the Oakland Athletics at O.co Coliseum, Oakland on September
18.
During first five innings of the game, the pitchers overcame the batters with their magnificent pitching. Scott Sizemore singled to left-field but Coco Crisp struck-out and Jemile Weeks flied out without taking any run at the bottom of the first inning.
Similarly, Tigers’ designated hitter Victor Martinez walked during second inning but the rest of his team-mates got out in search of scoring shots.
Alex Avila struck-out while Miguel Cabrera and Carlos Guillen both flied out without adding any run on their respective score-card. At the bottom of the fourth inning, Athletics seemed powerless as Crisp hit a single-run shot to right-centre while Josh Willingham
popped out to second base and Sizemore flied out without any run contribution.
Ryan Raburn walked in the fifth inning but Avila struck-out and Ramon Santiago ground out to first base. During the sixth inning, Jackson struck a solo homer (410) towards centre-field to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead. Tigers’ starter, Justin Verlander also
shined as he pitched eight score-less innings and struck-out six batters with an ERA of 2.29. He permitted three walks and three hits on his 116 pitches.
Verlander said, “I want the home crowd behind me. I know it will be loud since they haven't seen it since 2006. It would be nice to play in front of them.”
Speaking to reporters, Tigers’ manager Jim Leyland said, “The champagne bottles are packed and gone, and the cigars are gone. We have another mission and that's to get homefield advantage. If there's a fifth game, we want our fans to see it.”
In the eighth inning, Tigers got a 2-0 lead when Brandon Inge drove a double-run shot to deep left-field and Jackson posted a single run. Tigers continued to raise their lead 3-0 by adding one run during the ninth inning. Santiago sacrificed to pitcher and
Avila contributed the final run. Raburn occupied third base to end the ninth inning.
As a result, Tigers ended the four-game series 2-2 against Athletics at Oakland.
