Austin Jackson working on his swing technique with coach Lloyd McClendon – MLB News
With 2012 spring training season starting in a few weeks time, Detroit Tigers’ centre fielder Austin Jackson has started to work on his plate technique and stance with Coach Lloyd McClendon.
Jackson made his debut with the Tigers in 2009 and he entered 2010 Major League Baseball season as the third best prospect. With 36 hits, the right handed striker was named American League Rookie of the Month in April 2010. The centre fielder displayed some high quality defensive skills on the field to enter the Baseball America’s 2010 All-Rookie Team as an outfielder.
Showing great composure and mental strength, Jackson achieved considerable results in 2011 as well as he was named the American League player of the week in the first quarter of September. Batting with an astonishing .529 average with 13 runs scored, he proved to the baseball world what he was capable of.
However, Tigers’ coach McClendon believes that there is still a lot room for improvement in Jackson's game play. He has been feeding the 24-year-old striker with some useful tips on his swing technique and stance on the plate. Although Jackson produced great performances last season, he is yet to realise his immense potential.
"I'm extremely pleased by how quickly he adjusted and adapted. And really the credit goes to him because he wanted to do it and he was willing to do it. My hope is that we're going to see some drastic differences. The key is the ability to adjust and go to a two-strike approach," McClendon said. "And those are things he didn't do before."
McClendon further added that Jackson has a great learning attitude. He has worked hard on his swinging technique and the fans will see some great changes in his playing style this season.
The Tigers want the outfielder to reduce his large number of strikeouts and work towards a better career average this season. Jackson, on the other hand, will be looking to dominate the pitchers with his newly found swinging technique. If he can perform consistently, he will have a great chance to cement his place in Tigers’ roster.
