Austin Trout unanimously nails Delvin Rodriguez to defend title for the third time – Boxing News
Austin Trout, the current WBA World light middleweight champion, defeated his Saturday night Dominican opponent Delvin Rodriguez, the International Boxing Association Intercontinental light middleweight champion, and defended his title for the third consecutive
time, in a 12-round bout held on June 2, 2012.
The duo co-headlined Showtime’s weekly boxing show ‘ShoBox Championship Boxing’ and the fight card was organised and promoted by Richard Schaefer of Golden Boy Promotions. The ring for the showdown was set up at Home Depot Center situated in Carson, California,
United States.
The hefty pay-per-view was headlined by the International Boxing Organization cruiserweight title bout between Antonio Tarver and Lateef Kayode and also witnessed Leo Santa Cruz take on Vusi Malinga for the vacant IBF bantamweight gold.
Austin, 26, was seriously overshadowed by his Saturday night opponent’s experience but somehow managed to not only retain the gold but he also defended his undefeated streak. Trout, also known as ‘No Doubt’, was entering ihis career's 25th bout, boasting
24 wins with 14 coming via knockout.
Trout grabbed his WBA gold in a bout against Rigoberto Alvarez. Austin collected a unanimous decision and since then has defended it against David Lopez and Frank LoPorto.
Basically a southpaw, Austin has also held the WBC Continental Americas and WBA Fedelatin light middleweight titles in the past. His opponent, Delvin, 32, was entering in his 35th career bout, exhibiting a bit tarnished resume.
The Dominican proud has nailed 26 opponents and 14 of them via knockout. Rodriguez made a successful comeback after collecting one loss and one draw decision. Delvin was coming from a win over Pawel Wolak, a bout in which he also grabbed the vacant IBA Intercontinental
light middleweight gold.
Though the orthodox Delvin did not boast an intimidating win streak just like Austin, he had some facets in his favour such as the height and the reach advantage. Delvin used his height optimally and stunned Austin every now and then, the reason why the
champion Trout was unable to attack the challenger openly and with full force.
Trout after collecting a unanimous decision in his favour stated that he was unable to put forth an impressive performance. Trout commented, “I'm definitely, definitely happy with the win. I don't think it was my best of performances but I still won.”
Even Austin’s trainer Burke praised Delvin’s brawling style and commented, “In the last six fights I watched Rodriguez, he had six different styles. In Austin's fight alone, he used three different styles. That means three different adjustments.”
With this win Austin has not only defended his title but has also strengthened his streak by one more win. Delvin, on the other hand, has unfortunately grabbed his sixth career loss.
