Australia, Russia and Argentina win - FIBA U-19 World Championship Round-up of July 6, 2011 (Part 2)
Game-4: Australia 72 – Poland 52
Jackson Aldridge tallied a game-high 21 points and Australia used a dominant third quarter to rout Poland 72-52 on Wednesday in a Group-E game. Besides Aldridge, Igor Hadziomerovic hit 14 and Mitchell Creek added 12 points for
Australia.   
Poland overpowered the Australian squad in the first quarter, as they tipped off aggressively and secured the period by 14-12. Australians came tearing out of their sleeping suits in the second quarter and snatched the lead from
Poland by using a 17-13 burst. At the close of the first half Australia were leading Poland by 29-27.
The Australians came really hard on Poland after the break, as they out performed them with a 24-6 blitz and took the commanding lead by pushing the score to 53-33. Poland failed to bring the lead down in the final quarter, as
Australia maintained top spot in their group with another win in the 1/8 Finals. Centre Piotr Niedzwiedzki led all Poland scorers with 11 points, five rebounds and one steal.
Game-5: Russia 73 – Latvia 63
Alexander Varnakov marshalled Russia, as they overcame Latvia by 73-63 on Wednesday in a Group-E game. Varnakov thumped a game-high 21 points, clutched two rebounds and also racked two assists. Dmitry Kulagin also hit 15 points
for the Russians.
The 6th ranked Latvians shocked Russia when they outscored them with a 21-15 surge in the first quarter and sealed the period in their favour. The game remained poised in the second and third quarter, before the Russian
rage began in the final period.
The Russians made their decisive move in the fourth, as they penetrated the solid backcourt of Latvia and used a 30-14 spurt and break the game. Kaspars Vecvagars remained the major contributor for Poland with 17 points and three
assists.
Game-6: Argentina 71 – Brazil 69
On Wednesday night, Argentina surged from behind to pull off a 71-69 win over Brazil in extra time in a Group-E game. Massarelli thumped 15 points for Argentina to lead the way while Franco Giorgetti supported him with 13 points
and six rebounds in a South American thriller.
Brazil was belligerent right from the tip and did not allow Argentina to make it even into the double-digit mark in the first quarter. By the time, the first quarter ended, Brazil were leading their rivals by 19-8.
Argentina, who looked down and out in the first period, made the ferocious charge in the second quarter and slashed the short fall down to just six points. Brazil however still had the lead at 30-24.
The Argentineans continued their surge after the break. They limited the Brazilians and made it a one point game at the end of the third at 43-42, advantage Brazil. In the fourth quarter, the Argentineans finally managed to draw
level. And they did it in style too. Massarelli nailed a buzzer beater in the regular time to tie the scores 62 all, pushing the game into overtime.
The Argentineans grabbed the extra time opportunity with both hands and outscored the Brazilians with 9-7 run to clinch the win.
Felipe Taddei led the Brazilian squad with 15 points together with three rebounds, catered for one assist and stole one too.
