Australia, South Africa name squads for Women’s World T20 – Cricket News Roundup – Part 3 – August 29, 2012
Cricket Australia today, August 29, 2012, announced its final squad for next month’s ICC Women’s World T20 Championship, to be hosted by Sri Lanka.
The CA selectors have retained majority of the players who toured India in March this year, and won the series 4-1. The only change in the squad is South Australia all-rounder Lauren Ebsary coming in for left-hander Sharon Millanta.
"We believe that Lauren's all-round ability across the three disciplines of batting, bowling and fielding gives the team more competitive options for success in this event," Julie Savage, the chair of Cricket Australia women selectors, told media reporters.
Australia squad: Jodie Fields (capt, wk), Alex Blackwell, Jess Cameron, Sarah Coyte, Lauren Ebsary, Rachael Haynes, Alyssa Healy, Julie Hunter, Jess Jonassen, Meg Lanning, Erin Osborne, Ellyse Perry, Leah Poulton, Lisa Sthalekar.
Cricket South Africa on Wednesday confirmed their final 14-member squad to tour Sri Lanka next month, to participate in the latest edition of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup.
Mignon du Preez has been retained as the Proteas skipper for the mega event, owing to the impressive work done by her during the tournament preparations. The 24-year-old Natal-born Trisha Chetty will deputise du Preez during the World Cup.
"Mignon du Preez has played a vital role in our preparations and is growing quickly in this leadership role," said Yashin Ebrahim, the coach of the Proteas women team. "Her calm demeanour, both on and off the field, has gelled the squad."
South Africa squad: Mignon du Preez (capt), Trisha Chetty (vice-capt), Susan Benade, Dinesha Devnarain, Shandre Fritz, Alison Hodgkinson, Shabnim Ismail, Marizanne Kapp, Ayabonga Khaka, Marcia Letsoalo, Sunette Loubser, Sune Luus, Yolandi van der Westhuizen, Dane van Niekerk.
Former Pakistan all-rounder Azhar Mahmood has come hard on PCB selectors saying they have not picked up a balanced squad for next month’s World T20 Championship, in Sri Lanka.
“In the World T20, there is only one genuine all-rounder which is inexplicable,” said the right-hander, who plays for Kent in the English county. "There is no Umar Gul in the ODI series against Australia and there is no Aizaz Cheema or Wahab Riaz in the World T20 squad. You cannot explain all these," he added further.
Mahmood, who is a British citizen now, said that there is no selection policy in Pakistan, and the PCB selectors keep “chopping and changing” players now and then, adding that this has been one realistic reason behind Pakistan’s inconsistent performance.
