Tasmania 392 & 272/0d v New South Wales 264 & 292 - Match drawn
The 18th match in the ongoing Sheffield Shield tournament between New South Wales and Tasmania ended in a draw on the fourth and final day at Manuka Oval, Canberra on Friday, December 09, 2011.
Needing 401 runs to win, New South Wales (NSW) required another 388 runs with 10 wickets at stumps on the third day of play with openers http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Nic-Maddinson-c2099 (1) on the crease.
As Tasmania cited a win on the final day, NSW desperately wanted to avoid defeat and had an option to either end the game in a draw or go for the kill, but in both cases the batsmen needed to retain wickets.
The morning of the final day turned out to be crucial as NSW lost the wicket of Jaques early on, who found his way back to the pavilion without adding a run. At the time of this wicket, NSW had posted only 19 runs on the board.
With Jaques gone, it was time for middle-order batsman http://www.senore.com/Cricket/SPD-Smith-c2555 to take the crease as the youngster owed redemption to his team after failing to score a run in the first innings.
In the 16th over, Tasmania struck again by dismissing Maddinson on 19 runs off 45 deliveries. At the time of his demise, NSW had bolstered 37 runs on the board.
It was then http://www.senore.com/Cricket/SM-Katich-c2543’s turn to walk in the field as the batsman crafted a potent partnership alongside Smith.
The two batsmen increased the run rate as they looked well set to steer their side towards victory.
The Tasmanian bowlers needed to break the partnership before letting the game slip out of their hands and ultimately in the 45th over, they grabbed the wicket of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Smith-c90598, who walked off the field after playing a well tamed knock of 35 runs. At the time of his departure, the side had posted 132 runs on the board.
Katich on the other hand, kept smashing the bowlers all around the park. However, NSW started losing wickets at the other end, which placed tremendous pressure on Katich and consequently with 178 runs on the board, Katich fell.
The batsman lost his wicket after hammering a 76-run knock as he desperately tried to help his side.
In the end, Tasmania also lost their way and failed to bowl-out their opponents as the game ended without a result after NSW posted 292 runs on the board for the loss of eight wickets.
Tasmanian opener, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Steven-Cazzulino-c91284, was named as the Player of the Match for scoring 142 runs in the game.
