I am planning a vacation with my family of 2 kids this coming November. Could not decide where to go - Melbourne, Perth or Sydney ? Where is most suitable for the kids to enjoy themselves ? They love beaches and of course Themeparks. At the same time, for us to have some romantic memories.

  1. Perth is a pretty city but it is isolated and not nearly as big as the cities on the east coast. Melbourne is great for shopping and has some of the best cafe and restaurants in Australia. It is also the culture capital of Australia. Sydney is a beautiful city that houses most of Australia's greatest icons, the Opera House, Harbour Bridge, Taronga Zoo, Bondi Beach and is in close proximity to the Blue Mountains.

One suggestion would be the Gold Coast, near Brisbane as it houses a good deal of theme parks. The tacky tourist spot of Australia, similar to Florida. Great for the tourist and the kids. Although November is a fickle month as school leaver head for their to let down their hair and party day and night in celebration of having graduated or not from High school.Lots of drunk kids. So if you decide on there the hotels and booking people should be able to tell you the exact dates of shoolies 'week' which is more than a week. Think Florida spring break.

  2. The Gold Coast is best for the Theme parks, but is also best avoided during the Schoolies period.

If your dates coincide with Schoolies, I would look at going to Sydney with a trip up to the Gold Coast for the Theme parks only.

Sydney is a great place to visit etc, and will be lovely and warm in November.

You can check what the weather was like in Nov 2007 here: http://www.bom.gov.au/climate/dwo/200711...

The lowest nightime temp was 13.9°C with the highest daytime 26.4°C.

  3. I'd recommend Sydney or Melbourne. Perth is pretty but there's not really much there and Sydney beaches are much nicer.

If you want theme parks the only ones in Australia are on the Gold Coast. However as everyone has said, schoolies is in mid/late November.

I'd say go to Sydney. And stop at the Goldcoast for a couple of days for the theme parks. Dreamworld and movie world are the best for teens. Sea World is good for little kids. and Wet and Wild if they're good swimmers

  4. Sydney is more alive than Melbourne and the weather is much better!

You can go to Jamberoo for water rides etc:

  5. I recommend going to the Gold Coast. November will be spring here, so be prepared for relatively cool, sometimes cold and rainy days. I'm pretty sure you will not be doing any swimming in Melbourne in Nov. Sydney can be a little warmer.

However, the Gold Coast should be very nice weather, with beaches and amusement parks. I highly recommend looking into there.

    Good luck and safe travels.

For all of those who think the weather is grand in Melbourne in November, obviously do not live in Melbourne during November.

November 15, 2006 we had snow and ice in and around the city. The Highway was filled with slush past Chadstone. The reason I remember the date, is it was my birthday. Spring is unpredictable in Melbourne, could be warm, could be cool, and will likely be wet as October/November are the wettest in the area.

The nice weather generally does not appear until after Christmas.

  6. Yes, what everyone else said was correct.

Schoolies is absolutely crazy - the main place to avoid is Byron Bay in QLD.

Even if you did want to go to Byron Bay, the prices are absolutely insane! I would also avoid Noosa for the same reason.

I would not go to Perth - Its isolated and not so fun.

Melbourne and Sydney are the best.

Melbourne in November  -  the weather will be very nice (about the same, maybe a bit warmer in Sydney).

From Melbourne you can travel down the Mornington (down the Nepean Highway) or Bellarine Peninsulas(down The Great Ocean Road)...... these are the beaches which are really nice but I would avoid Lorne (down the Great Ocean Road) and Portsea (Mornington Peninsula).

This is where all the kids who have just finished school who don't go to Byron Bay generally go for their schoolies week.

Sydney is pretty similar although there are the classic Aussie sights such as the harbour bridge and the opera house.

If you want to do a really touristy trip go to Sydney for this.

There is Bondi and Manly beaches which are really nice (although very busy).

I have spent a fair bit of time in Sydney  but I dont know it that well (I'm a Melbourne girl).

Either Melb or Syd would be amazingly fun. Much better than Perth.

If you are wanting a really beachy holiday (where there are a few Australian theme parks like crocodile parks etc - great for the kids) Port Douglas is a lot of fun.

You can drive north to Mossman Gorge which is probably one of the only rivers in tropical north QLD that doesn't have crocodiles in it!

and there are all the crocodile zoos etc.

Theyre fun! I went there with my family.

Have fun! Us Aussies love visitors!

  7. If you want beaches AND theme parks the only place to go is the Gold Coast in Queensland.

    Schoolies Week -

Call it rite of passage, coming of age or just a heck of a party, but Schoolies Week on the Gold Coast every November is one of the biggest teen festivals Australia.

It marks the end of 12 years of schooling for Queensland students and they converge on the Gold Coast every November for up to 10 days of partying, sun, surf, sand and freedom.

What dates are Schoolies Week activities held in Queensland?

Schoolies week activities are held in a number of regions throughout Queensland between 16-25 November. This year regions receiving state government funding for safe Schoolies celebrations are:

    Gold Coast

    Sunshine Coast

    Rockhampton/Yepoon

    Airlie Beach

    Magnetic Island

Please note: Schoolies week activities do not take place in Brisbane. If you are planning to visit Brisbane during November you will not be affected by this event.

  8. Hi, I would recommend the Sunshine Coast....

1 hr drive north of brisbane, in november, we are surfing to our hearts content because of the warm weather, beautiful non packed beaches with bbq facilities, no skoolies week idiots ruining our prestine and quite area.

The Sunshine Coast is very family orientated,we are more laid back and relaxed compared to the Gold Coast.

This is a very romantic, laid back holiday destination with unpoluted, uncrowded beaches, then 20 mins drive away you find the beautiful hinterland area which offers rainforest walks, scenic drives and the famous Australia Zoo.

Accomodation is very reasonably priced for november, I would recommend Caloundra as we have fantastic resturants, eateries, surf clubs for meals, locals markets etc.

The theme parks are only 1hr30mins drive south for the kids.

The Sunshine Coast is worth a look, very affordable eating, accom and is family friendly.

Enjoy your trip to Aussie where ever you decide to stay...

  9. It will be quite warm, Melbourne is more European, Sydney has beaches after a bus ride and is really fast and exciting, you could do romantic thiings for little or no real cost around the harbour, Perth is more natural and wild and Fremantle has the most fantastic restaurants by the sea.   Can't help you with theme parks I'm afraid.  Take the kids on a ferry boat ride and the zoo they may get to cuddle a Koala!
