Australia? Still safe?

I love Australia very much but this year I have heard heaps of stuff about crime.

I hear every single morning on the radio about drive by shootings, people answering doors and being shot dead (happend near Melbourne the other day), people being stabbed to death walking home, tourists being mugged and bashed here on the Gold Coast.

Back in January this year a man was shot dead just down the road from me in front of his kids! Scary ay!

Back in 2005, a travel warning was issued for our country to tourists.

My house has been broken into 4 times since I have been living in this house and when I tell my fellow students this, they do not believe me. This stuff does happen in our country people!

I was wondering if any of you, as Australia have been the victims of crime?

Australia is a great place to live! Just don't let your gaurd down!

  1. it all depends on where u live, some places are safe some aren't. its all about money.

if u live in the city there are some places u just dont live .

and yeah u get your sicko's that shot people. but its not every day stuff.

i live in the country and i have never had my house broken into, i have never seen a gun or knife at me.

its just where the world is going.  i suggest you get a large fence, really good lighing, bacuse if your house is dark no one will see them break in. and think of getting a large dog , so it will make noise if they turn up

    i love australia

  2. I think it's still very safe. Sounds like you need some better security!

  3. yeah it definitely depends on the suburb you live in.. thats pretty unlucky getting broken into 4 times though!!

I know a lot of stuff happens such as shootings but its usually gang or drug related... if you stay out of that kind of stuff its not very likely. that guy that got shot in the leg the otehr day through his front door.. well the people that shot him were looking for his son.. and the police are pretty sure it was drug related.. and no matter where you are people involved in that stuff will be violent! as for drive bys.... im pretty sure you are safe from that. they are usually all planned as well...

I live in Adelaide.. and yeah its small.. and no we arent as bad as u think!! but I still lock my doors... I lock my car doors when Im driving... purely to be on the safe side. and id do this no matter where I lived! I dont believe its getting any more dangerous. just always keep an eye out and be safe i guess!

  4. Sounds like you live in a c**p suburb- where I live I don't even bother locking the doors when I go out.

  5. I live here and i think its safe, i mean i wouldnt encourage someone to go out into cavil ave early in the morning by themselves or do the same in nerang, however most places are safe.

As for the whole crime thing, man it happens everywhere, its just the way media portrays things!

I mean if its going to sell then why not put it in?

As for living here, id say its pretty safe!

  6. All I can say is that I sure hope all this has been sensationalized because I loved Australia when we visited there.  My husband and I have said several times that if we didn't have relatives in the US, we'd move to Australia!

I would say that, just like any country, you should use common sense and use caution.  Try not to looks like a vulnerable tourist!  We were in New South Wales (Sydney, then Blue Mountains, then Griffith, Wee Waa, Gold Coast) then flew up to Cairns and the Great Barrier Reef.  Fabulous trip.  I'd do it again in a heartbeat!
