Australia Team announced its final Olympic Road Race squad
Australian side has announced its final squad for the biggest cycling event of the year, the 2012 Olympic Games.
Former Athens Olympian, Matt White briefed that the selection took a lot of consideration as the Australian camp is immensely talented.
He cited, "This has been one of the most difficult team selections in Australia's cycling history because we really have enough talent to field two teams of Olympic standard".
Matt noted that the selectors had to choose between the 30 top cyclists in the Australian camp which made the job very difficult.
“The selectors have chosen a team based on our race strategies for London - but we won't be going into detail about what those strategies are for obvious reasons”.
“What I can say is that we're definitely in the hunt to challenge for the top step of the podium."
Matt Goss has given an opportunity to mark his debut appearance at the mega event after his tremendous performance during the 2011 UCI Road World Championships in Copenhagen.
Stuart O’Grady will be riding his sixth Olympics, while Simon Gerrans will fight for the gold at the 250 kilometre road race.
Cadel Evans has also earned a spot for the time trials event and will appear in his fourth Olympics.
Evans will be accompanied by Michael Rogers, who marked his Olympics debut in Sydney.
"The selectors have chosen a team based on our race strategies for London - What I can say is that we're definitely in the hunt to challenge for the top step of the podium," Matt White explained.
Contrary to the Men’s side, all the three riders in the women will be riding their first ever Olympics event.
Chloe Hosking and Amanda Spratt will compete at the road race event with Shara Gillow lining up for both the time trial and the road race.
The selection has been made considering the recent performances of the cyclists and the management is determined that the team is capable of grabbing gold at the 2012 Olympic Games.
The final Australian line-up for the biggest cycling event of the year is as below,
Mens' team: Cadel Evans, Simon Gerrans, Matthew Goss, Stuart O'Grady and Michael Rogers
Womens' team: Shara Gillow, Chloe Hosking and Amanada Spratt.
