Skipper of the Australia Women’s team, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/ICC-World-Cup-2011-c100625 Women’s
World Twenty20 against the England Women.
While the Australia Women’s 7-wicket defeat at the Galle International Stadium on October 1 had little effect on their chances in the ongoing tournament (with both teams having qualified for the semi-finals), Fields expressed her dismay at the manner in
which the bowling attack had been unable to defend the total.
“It felt like we were right in the match right up until the last couple of overs,” she said. “Our batting innings went the way we wanted it to do, we aimed for 140 and we got that target.”
The match kicked off with the Australia Women winning the toss and electing to bat first. Opener http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Meg-Lanning-c75532, who has been fairly consistent in the tournament so far, delivered another impressive performance, top-scoring for her side with 39 off 31.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Alexandra-Joy-Blackwell-c43285 (27) chipped in with supporting performances, in addition to establishing the highest partnership on their side (a 54-run stand for the 4th wicket), and the Australia Women posted a final total of 144 by the end of
20 overs.
However, the team was not able to effectively defend the total, and an unbeaten 65 from http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sarah-Jane-Taylor-c88769 propelled the England Women to a 7-wicket victory, with 11 deliveries still remaining.
Nevertheless, both teams have managed to make it to the semi-finals stage of the tournament. The England Women will be playing the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/West-Indies-c760
Women at the same venue on October 5.
With the semi-finals fast-approaching, Fields is confident that her team will have no trouble tackling the Windies Women, having previously played them in a Women’s World T20 warm-up match on September 23.
“West Indies are a strong team and we were lucky enough to play them in a warm-up match which gave us an idea about how we can play against them,” Fields said.
