Aussie fans at Junction Oval, Melbourne, were left disappointed today as they witnessed their side lose to tourists New Zealand in the opening game of the three-match T20I series by six wickets.
New Zealand Women, who chose to field, made an early impact when they grabbed two wickets with the scoreboard still empty.
This was a shocking start for the tournament favourites, as they were caught off guard so early in the morning.
The third-wicket partnership between MM Lanning and LC Sthalekar yielded 15 runs, before perishing with the demise of LC Sthalekar for seven. Australia by now, were caught in trouble and needed to contain the situation before watching the game slip out of
their hands.
Lanning was then joined by http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Andrew-Charles-Lennox-James-c44309 Blackwell and the two batswomen forged a potent comeback as they took the score to 90 with the opener doing most of the scoring.
However, this partnership was prevented from posting 100 runs on the board by Nielsen, who dismissed Blackwell after she had scored 29 runs.
With the Australian opener looking good at her end, the Kiwis were cleaning the batting line-up from the other side.
With wicketkeeper JM Fields halting the bowlers from her end, Lanning launched a brave attack, taking the score to 131, before eventually succumbing on 76 runs.
The remaining batting line-up was conveniently wiped off, as Australia faltered after posting 151 runs on the board with Fields unbeaten on 17.
It was still a fighting total for the Aussies as some outstanding bowling was needed to get them home.
The girls in gold made inroads with only two runs on the board as Australia’s star all-rounder EA Perry had New Zealand opener LR Doolan caught behind for one.
Next to go was AE Satterthwaite as she perished after scoring only eight runs, leaving her side with 11 runs on the board.
However, before Australia could gloat any further, SW Bates and SFM Devine crafted an impressive partnership to take the score to 78.
Later, with skipper Bates as the highest scorer for hammering 42 runs, New Zealand reached the target in 19.4 overs for the loss of four wickets.
