While the low, slow pitch at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo did not have much to offer the batters, the Australia Women made up for their low total with a fierce bowling attack, going on to secure a spot in the final of the ongoing ICC Women’s World
Twenty20 by claiming a 28-run win over the West Indies Women, during the semi-final played today on October 5.
With the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/New-Zealand-c754 Women to qualify for the final, the Australia Women’s victory over the West Indies grants them the chance to defend their World T20 title in the tournament final at the R Premadasa on October 7.
With both teams going into the match with an unchanged line-up, the Australia Women won the toss, and skipper http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Jodie-Maree-Fields-c67118 chose to bat first, given the surface’s tendency to deteriorate as the match progresses. Predictably, the batters found it difficult
to extract runs from the pitch, and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Shanel-Francine-Daley-c89696 (4-0-23-2) and Shaquana Quintyne (4-0-23-2) ensured that their opponents were not allowed to apply themselves at the crease.
The Australia Women opened their batting with http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Meg-Lanning-c75532 (19), but Daley struck early, sending Healy packing in the very first over. Jess Cameron (11) was next up to bat, but Daley claimed her for her second victim of the day in the
3rd over.
Lanning, Australia’s top run-getter in the tournament so far, failed to fire, sent packing on 19 by the 16-year-old Quintyne in the 8th over. Lisa Sthalekar’s meagre 23 was the top-score on the Australia Women’s side, and her 32-run partnership
with http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Alexandra-Joy-Blackwell-c43285 (21) was the highest on her team.
Tremayne Smartt dislodged Sthalekar in the 13th over, and Blackwell followed her back to the pavilion in the 16th over, caught and bowled by Quintyne, leaving the score at 81 for 5. Skipper Fields (19*) and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Rachael-Louise-Haynes-c83221 (15) attempted
to revive the innings with a 30-run partnership, but the final over saw both Haynes and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Erin-Alyse-Osborne-c56181 (1) dismissed via run out. By the end of 20 overs, Fields, accompanied by Julie Hunter (3*), got the team up to a total of 115.
The Australia Women went on to launch a fierce defence of their total, with http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Ellyse-Alexandra-Perry-c55924 (4-0-19-2), aided by Osborne (4-0-20-2), triggering a complete batting order collapse.
With the exception of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/West-Indies-c760 Women managed to register double-digit individual scores, and their 48-run stand for the 5th wicket remained the highlight of their innings.
The failures of hard-hitters Stafanie http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Deandra-Jalisa-Shakira-Dottin-c53408 (6) proved particularly disappointing, and faltering on the difficult surface, in the face of their opponents’ intense bowling attack, the West Indies Women found themselves cut off at 87,
all out, propelling the Australia Women into the final with a 28-run victory.
