  1. Mate go to this site as all states have different rules.

Also don,t touch a scooter.as a motorcycle rider of 30 years,I,m telling you you will kill yourself.

To much distance, cars too fast, roads are c**p,and the heat will kill it over distance.

Mate if I were you I would be looking for a 4 stroke trail bike at least 250,but prefer bigger. That way you can explore the bush tracks and go a bit more off the beaten track. If you get a good bike you will not have trouble selling it.

Trail bikes do hold their value here.

As for registration, this is like a tax disc that allows you to have it on the road. You will have to change this into your name and that will cost you about $100.I think you will need an address to put it in your name.

I will give you some web sites to check out the prices of bikes.

Also avoid two strokes, use to much fuel. Its all confusing but I hope these sites help.

PS I love Triumphs,Great to see em back, used to own them in the 70's and 80's.

Also stick to j*p bikes as they have a good dealer network for parts and repairs,it is a very big empty country.

Another thought as I have toured on a 400cc trail bike, put a slightly bigger sprocket on the front or a slightly smaller on the back, less revs and more speed and comfort to tour.

A bike dealer can do that for you, hope to see you on the road .

One more thing, rego has third party insurance, that covers injury to other people and now some cover for yourself. The other insurance is for theft accidents to the bike and other cars etc.Not compulsery, but that is a risk you will have to decide yourself.

  2. If you are going to be driving here for less than 3 months you can use your UK licence.

You don't need an international drivers licence to drive a car in Australia for that length of time.

I wouldn't suggest you buy a scooter to travel around Australia. The distances are too great for that.

Tourists may drive in Australia on a valid overseas drivers license for the same class of vehicle.

Here some websites to get you started:

  3. You will need a motor bike licence. It would be easier getting one over in the UK 1st as to sit one in australia now its too long for the test as we have brought in new rules recently and have to sit a test called q-ride. Anyways just get it in the UK nad get an international drivers licence befre you get here. Then you won't have to worry about that when you get here.

As for a scooter around australia thats going to be pretty hard. I would get a 250cc cruiser motorbike. Alot easier on you and the vehicle. You'll spend a bit more up front but won't have near as many problems.

Also make sure the bike has rego (which in australia includes 3rd party insurance) still, as its pretty hard for an international person to get it unless you have an aussie mate. So when buying look when the rego expires. If its already expired don't touch it, if its got more than what you are planning to stay here for grab it.

  4. In Australia you will need a Motorcycle licence to have a scooter. IF you are hiring it you will need to talk to the hirer's about insurance costs if  Buying then you need to get insurance separately which you can also do through the Bike dealer.  We are different in this respect to the UK not as many Law's about insurance & vehicles.

  5. Distances in Australia are big.  Although it would be possible to do it on a scooter (some madmen tour Australia on pushbikes) you will be spending a long time in the saddle.

  6. WTF is everyone talking about?? You will NOT need a motorbike licence to drive a scooter over here! You can ride them on a car licence, the small ones anyway, that only do around 60kph. But it would be pretty hairy on the main highways with road trains flying past you all day.

You will need to register the scooter, and get your international drivers licence before you arrive.
